The air cleaner element, housed above or to one side of the carburetor must be replaced every 12,000 miles (1973-74 models), 15,000 miles (1975-80 models), or 30,000 miles (1980-83 models).

  1. To remove, unscrew the wing nut(s), bolts and/or spring clips from the air cleaner cover; on some models, it may be necessary to also remove a standard nut.
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner cover and the air cleaner element.
  4.
  5. Using a clean rag, clean out the air cleaner housing.
  6.
  7. Using a new air cleaner element, reverse the removal procedures.
  8.

Air cleaner elements are not interchangeable, although they may appear to be. Make sure you have the proper element for the year and model.
