Honda Accord/Civic/Prelude 1973-1983 Repair Guide

The upper/lower radiator hoses and all heater hoses should be checked for deterioration, leaks and loose hose clamps every 15,000 miles/12 months (1973-79) or 30,000 miles/24 months (1980-83).

See Figure 1

  1. Drain the cooling system.

When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Loosen the hose clamps at each end of the hose.

Fig. Fig. 1: Removing the heater hose clamps

  1. Working the hose back and forth, slide it off it's connection, then, install a new hose, if necessary.

When replacing the heater hoses, maintain a 11/2inch clearance from any surface.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Refill the cooling system.

Draw the hoses tight to prevent sagging or rubbing against other components; route the hoses through the clamps as installed originally. Always make sure that the hose clamps are beyond the component bead and placed in the center of the clamping surface before tightening them.
