    Alternator

    Print

The alternator converts the mechanical energy which is supplied by the drive belt into electrical energy by electromagnetic induction. When the ignition switch is turned ON , current flows from the battery, through the charging system light, to the voltage regulator and finally to the alternator.

When the engine is started, the drive belt turns the rotating field (rotor) in the stationary windings (stator), inducing alternating current. This alternating current is converted into usable direct current by the diode rectifier. Most of this current is used to charge the battery and power the electrical components of the vehicle. A small part is returned to the field windings of the alternator enabling it to increase its power output. When the current in the field windings reaches a predetermined control voltage, the voltage regulator grounds the circuit, preventing any further increase. The cycle is continued so that the voltage remains constant.

All present day Hondas use a nominal 12 volt alternator. (Exact output should be higher, generally 13.5-15.1 volts.) Amperage ratings may vary according to year, model and accessories. All use either a transistorized, non-adjustable voltage regulator or control the alternator output through the engine computer (ECU) used for the fuel injection. The 1984-87 Preludes use an external regulator mounted on the right shock tower; all others are contained within the alternator case.

    PRECAUTIONS

To prevent damage to the alternator, regulator and ECU, the following precautionary measures must be taken when working with the electrical system.

    1. Never reverse the battery connections. Always check the battery polarity visually. This is to be done before any connections are made to ensure that all of the connections correspond to the battery ground polarity of the vehicle.
    2.
    3. Booster batteries must be connected properly. Make sure the positive cable of the booster battery is connected to the positive terminal of the battery which is getting the boost.
    4.
    5. Disconnect the battery cables before using a fast charger; the charger has a tendency to force current through the diodes in the opposite direction. This causes damage.
    6.
    7. Never use a fast charger as a booster for starting the car.
    8.
    9. Never disconnect the alternator or regulator connectors while the engine is running.
    10.
    11. Do not ground the alternator output terminal.
    12.
    13. Do not operate the alternator on an open circuit with the field energized.
    14.
    15. Do not attempt to polarize the alternator.
    16.
    17. Disconnect the battery cables and remove the alternator before using an electric arc welder on the vehicle.
    18.
    19. Protect the alternator from excessive moisture. If the engine is to be steam cleaned, cover or remove the alternator.
    20.

    TESTING

Honda recommends the use of the Sun VAT-40 (or an equivalent charging system tester) for testing of the charging system. Follow the instructions supplied by the test equipment manufacturer.

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The alternator is generally mounted low on the engine on the firewall side. This makes access very awkward. The work must be done both over-the-fender and from below, depending on your agility and reach. Whenever the work is to be performed from below, the vehicle must be safely supported on jackstands. If only the front is supported, the parking brake must be applied and the rear wheels firmly blocked. Once elevated, the gravel or splash shield must be removed from under the engine.
