REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1984-89 Accord and 1984-87 Prelude

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. The front and rear main or crankshaft seals are held by the crankshaft endcaps; they are removed with the crankshaft. When reassembling, apply non-hardening sealant along the seams where the cap joins the block before installing the seals. The crank and caps should be in place, although the bolts for the crank endcaps should not be fully tightened until after the seals are installed.
  4.
  5. Apply a light coat of grease to the sealing surfaces of both seals. Pack the back of each seal with grease to hold the spring in place during installation.
  6.
  7. Using a seal driver of the correct diameter and reach, install the pulley-end seal until the driver bottoms out against the snout of the crankshaft. The seal should be installed with the part number facing the outside.
  8.
  9. Using a seal driver of the correct size and reach, install the rear or flywheel-end seal. Align the hole in the driver to fit over the pin on the crankshaft. Drive the seal in until the driver bottoms on the block.

  10.
  11. Remove the bolts securing the seal housing, then remove it from the engine. Remove the rear main seal.
  12.

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Lubricate the lip of the seal prior to installation. Pack the inner spring pocket of the seal with grease to prevent the spring from dislodging during installation.
  2.
  3. Install the rear main seal in the seal housing using a suitable installation tool. Install the seal with the part number side towards the installation tool. Apply liquid gasket to the block mating surface and the seal housing retainer bolts. Install the seal housing on the block. Tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
