Valve Springs



Valve spring removal and installation is part of the valve removal and installation procedure covered earlier in this section.

Valve springs should be checked while the valve train is disassembled. Place each valve spring on a flat surface next to a steel square. Measure the length of the spring, and rotate it against the edge of the square to measure distortion. If spring length varies (by comparison) by more than 0.039 in. (1mm) or if distortion exceeds 0.039 in. (1mm), replace the spring.

Honda does not offer a specification for spring tension. Springs will loose tension over time and may even break. This loss of tension will have a direct effect on engine performance. In addition, if a valve spring were to break, engine damage could result. Because of this, it is a good idea to replace the springs if the head is being rebuilt. They are usually a fairly inexpensive item and a worthwhile investment.
