The firing order is the order in which spark is sent to each cylinder. The spark must arrive at the correct time in the combustion cycle or damage may result. For this reason, connecting the correct plug to the correct distributor terminal is critical. To avoid confusion, always replace the spark plug wires one at a time.

On 4-cylinder models, the No.1 cylinder is closest to the timing belt or pulley end of the engine. On the Accord V-6, it is the cylinder closest to the pulley end of the engine on the firewall side. All 4-cylinder Accord and Prelude engines fire in the order 1-3-4-2. The V-6 Accord fires in the order of 1-4-2-5-3-6. Accords and Preludes use distributors from different manufacturers. While the firing order and plug wire placement may be the same for some, the caps have differently shaped bases and mounting points; know which one you have or take an old one with you when buying tune-up parts.

An additional aid to correct installation is that most Honda distributor caps are marked either with cylinder numbers or at least a single mark for cylinder No. 1. All 4-cylinder engine distributors rotate in a clockwise direction when viewed from the top or cap side. On 6-cylinder models, distributor rotation is counterclockwise.
