Honda Accord/Prelude 1984-1995 Repair Guide

Power Steering Pump

Only genuine Honda power steering fluid may be used when adding fluid. Honda states that ATF or fluids manufactured for use in other brands of vehicles are not compatible with the Honda power steering system. The use of any other fluid will cause the seals to swell and create leaks. Honda's proprietary fluid is not generally available in retail outlets; purchase a can of fluid at your dealer and keep it stored until needed.

See Figure 1

The fluid in the power steering reservoir should be checked every few weeks for indications of leaks or low fluid level. The fluid is not routinely changed. If necessary to drain the fluid during repairs, it may be reused if it is not contaminated by system failure or a dirty container.

The power steering fluid reservoir is located at either the left or right front of the engine compartment, just behind the headlight area. Check the fluid with the engine cold and the vehicle parked on a level spot. View the level through the side of the reservoir. The level should be between the upper and lower marks. Fluid need not be added right away unless it has dropped almost to the lower mark. Do not overfill the reservoir.
