Upper Control Arm

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1986-89 Accord and 1984-91 Prelude
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheels. Support the lower control arm assembly with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nuts, upper control arm bolts and upper control anchor bolts. Remove the upper ball joint using a ball joint separator tool.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the upper arm, tightening the Accord flange bolts to 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm) or the Prelude bolts to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the upper ball joint. Tighten the nut to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel and lower the car.
  6.  

1990-95 Accord and 1992-95 Prelude
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an air bag, properly disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), as detailed in Chassis Electrical .
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheels. Support the lower control arm assembly with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nuts, upper control arm bolts and upper control anchor bolts. Remove the upper ball joint using a ball joint separator tool.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the upper arm, tightening the flange nuts to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the upper ball joint. Tighten the nut to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel and lower the car.
  6.  
  7. Properly enable the SRS system, if equipped, and connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

BUSHING REPLACEMENT



On 1994-95 Accords and 1992-95 Preludes, the bushings are not replaceable.

1986-89 Accord and 1984-91 Prelude

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Place the upper control arm assembly into a vise; remove the nut, upper arm bolt, upper arm anchor bolts and housing seals.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper arm collar. Drive out the upper arm bushings using a drift.
  4.

  1. Replace the upper control arm bushings, bushing seals and upper control arm collar with new ones. Be sure to coat the ends and the insides of the upper control arm bushings and the sealing lips of the upper control arm bushing with grease.

  1. Apply sealant to the threads and underside of the bolt head and nut. Install the upper arm bolt and tighten the nut to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).

1990-93 Accord

See Figures 4 and 5

  1. Place the upper control arm assembly into a holding fixture
  2.  
  3. Remove the though-bolts securing the upper arm anchor bolts.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Drive the new upper arm bushing into the upper arm anchor bolts. Drive in the bushing until the leading edges are flush with the anchor bolt.

  1. Install the upper arm anchor bolts, then tighten the nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Be sure to align the upper arm anchor bolt with the mark on the upper arm.
