REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1984-85 Accord

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the temperature slider and fan control knobs.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control panel cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper steering column support bracket, then lower the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Remove the center console and remove the radio.
  10.  
  11. Remove the screws from the front of the control panel. Loosen the panel by pushing it into the dash a little bit.

  1. Disconnect the temperature control cable from the heater unit.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the hot water control cable from the valve.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the wiring to the blower switch and remove the unit under the dash.
  6.  
  7. The control assembly may be disassembled into individual parts after removal.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Assemble the components if they were separated. Install the assembly from the back of the dash, setting it in place.
  2.  
  3. Connect the switch wiring. Make certain it is routed out of the way of the installation.
  4.  
  5. Connect and adjust the air and water control cables.
  6.  
  7. Install the front retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Install the console and radio.
  10.  
  11. Reposition and secure the steering column.
  12.  
  13. Install the heater control cover panel; install the control knobs.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

1986-89 Accord
PUSHBUTTON CONTROLS

See Figures 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the knobs from the temperature and fan controls.
  4.  
  5. Remove the heater control panel cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument cluster visor.
  8.

  1. Remove the center air outlet.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 4 screws holding the pushbutton unit and slide it outward gently. Disconnect the switch wires.
  4.  
  5. The blower fan switch may be removed individually if desired. Remove its mounting bolts and remove the switch.
  6.  
  7. If the temperature control lever is to be removed, remove the radio first. Disconnect the air mix cable at the heater box (not at the lever) and remove the assembly.

To install:
  1. Assemble and install the individual components (fan switch or temperature control cable) if they were removed.
  2.  
  3. Connect the wiring harness and install the pushbutton controller. Install and tighten the retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the center air outlet.
  6.  
  7. Install the instrument visor.
  8.  
  9. Install the control panel cover; install the control knobs.
  10.  

LEVER CONTROLS

See Figures 4 and 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the knobs from the control levers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control panel cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the radio.
  8.  
  9. At this point, the temperature/function levers, the recirculation switch or the fan control switch may be removed individually.
  10.

  1. If the main lever assembly is to be removed, remove the six retaining screws. Disconnect the temperature control cable and the function cable at the heater. Disconnect the wiring and remove the control unit.
  2.  
  3. If the fan switch or recirculation controller is to be removed, remove the retaining screws and unplug the wiring connector.
  4.

To install:
  1. Place the fan switch or recirculation connector in position, connect the wiring and secure the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Fit the control panel into place and route the cables to the heater.
  4.  
  5. Connect the cables to their proper fittings at the heater.
  6.  
  7. Install the retaining screws holding the control panel.
  8.  
  9. Install the radio.
  10.  
  11. Install the control panel cover and install the knobs on the levers.
  12.  

1990-93 Accord

See Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. If so equipped, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
  2.  
  3. Remove the ashtray. Remove the center console.
  4.  
  5. Remove the coin box, air vents and ashtray lighting bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the dashboard switches on the left and right of the steering wheel.
  8.

  1. Remove the radio/tape player. Note that there are concealed screws at the back or bottom of the radio unit.
  2.  
  3. Lower the steering wheel to its lowest position. Remove the dash visor. This is a large, one-piece assembly which includes the center dash trim.

  1. Disconnect the control cables at the heater assembly.

  1. Remove the four screws and gently pull the control panel forward.
  2.  
  3. Unplug the wiring connectors and remove the control panel.
  4.  
  5. If the fan switch or other individual components are to be replaced, the appropriate control knobs must be removed before disassembly.

To install:
  1. Assemble the individual components if they were removed.
  2.  
  3. Insert the panel into the dash and route the cables to the heater box.
  4.  
  5. Engage the wiring connectors, making certain the harness is out of the way.
  6.  
  7. Connect the cables at the heater assembly. Install the 4 retaining screws holding the control panel.
  8.  
  9. Install the dash visor. Make sure it is correctly positioned and that each retaining screw is in place.
  10.  
  11. Install the radio/tape player.
  12.  
  13. Install and connect the dash switches, air vents and ashtray bracket. Install the coin box.
  14.  
  15. Install the console; install the ashtray.
  16.  
  17. If applicable, enable the SRS.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  

1994-95 Accord

See Figures 10, 11 and 12

  1. Disconnect the battery cables, then disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the temperature control cable from the heater unit.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radio and the glove box.
  6.  
  7. Remove the dashboard switches on the left and right of the steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the six screws securing the instrument panel.
  10.  
  11. Carefully pull the panel out until the electrical connectors for the control panel and blower switch can be reached. Unplug the connectors, then remove the panel assembly from the vehicle.

  1. Remove the screws securing the control panel to the instrument panel.

  1. If necessary, the blower switch can be removed from the control panel after its knob and retaining screws have been removed.

To install:
  1. If applicable, install the blower switch to the control panel.
  2.  
  3. Install the control panel onto the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Position the instrument panel in the vehicle, and engage the electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. Install the screws securing the instrument panel.
  8.  
  9. Install the dashboard switches into the instrument panel.
  10.  
  11. Install the radio and glove box.
  12.  
  13. Connect the temperature control cable to the heater unit.
  14.  
  15. Enable the SRS, then connect the battery cables.
  16.  

1984-87 Prelude

See Figure 13

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the heater control harness.
  4.  
  5. Remove the temperature control/dash outlet assembly by removing the four screws. Remove the lower screws first.
  6.  
  7. If necessary, the temperature lever assembly can be removed from the control unit by removing the two screws from the bottom.
  8.

  1. Remove the 4 screws securing the control unit to the dash outlet, then remove the unit.
  2.  
  3. Install in the reverse order of removal.
  4.  

1988-91 Prelude

See Figures 14 and 15

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the center console.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radio.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two screws at the bottom of the center air vent and remove the air vent assembly.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the temperature cable at the heater assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 4 screws securing the control assembly; pull the controller forward gently. Unplug the wiring connectors and remove the control unit.

  1. If the blower switch is to be replaced, remove the control knob and remove the switch from the control assembly.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Reinstall any components removed from the control assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the control assembly and tighten the retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Connect the temperature cable at the heater unit.
  6.  
  7. Install the center air vent.
  8.  
  9. Install the radio.
  10.  
  11. Install the center console.
  12.  

1992-95 Prelude

See Figures 16 and 17

  1. Disconnect the battery cables, then disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
  2.  
  3. Remove the front console.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radio.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the temperature control cable from the heater unit.
  8.  
  9. Remove the three screws securing the control panel/center air vent assembly. Disengage the lock tabs with a small prytool and pull the assembly out of the dash enough to unplug the electrical connectors.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two screws securing the control panel to the center air vent.
  12.  
  13. If necessary, remove the screws securing the blower switch, then remove it from the control panel.
  14.  

To install:
  1. If applicable, install the blower switch on the control panel.
  2.

  1. Install the control unit to the center air vent.
  2.  
  3. Engage the electrical connectors, then install the center air vent/control unit assembly into the dash.
  4.  
  5. Connect the temperature control cable to the heater unit.
  6.  
  7. Install the radio and front console.
  8.  
  9. Enable the SRS, then connect the battery cables.
  10.
