REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1984-85 Accord

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the three screws at the top of the bezel (surround or trim piece). Use a spray lubricant such as silicone or vinyl protectant to lubricate the area between the bezel and the dashboard. The panel is a tight fit.

  1. Remove the trim panel from the dash. A prytool may be used at the bottom, but great care must be taken not to crack the plastic.
  2.  
  3. When the panel is loose in the dash, remove the 4 screws securing the gauge assembly. Pull the gauge assembly forward just enough to allow access to the wires and speedometer cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the speedometer cable and the electrical harnesses. Do not pull on the wires when disconnecting the harnesses. Remove the gauge assembly.
  6.  
  7. Individual instruments may be removed from the cluster after it is removed from the car. Avoid damage to any terminals or the printed circuit board.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the gauge cluster; connect the wiring and speedometer cable before it is fully in place. Install the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Re-lubricate the area contacted by the bezel. Install the bezel, making certain it is evenly placed with no gaps or bends.
  4.  
  5. Install the retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel.
  8.  

1986-89 Accord

See Figures 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Lower the steering wheel to its lowest position.
  4.  
  5. Remove each switch from the lower dashboard. The switches may be removed by gently prying up on the bottom edge to release them. Use care to avoid damage to the surrounding area. Once loose, pull the switch straight out and disconnect the wiring.

  1. On the top of the instrument visor, remove the small access lid. Remove the two screws below the lid.

  1. Remove the 4 lower screws (in the ports occupied by the switches). Remove the instrument visor.

  1. Remove the 4 screws holding the gauge cluster. Pull it forward just enough to gain access to the wiring and speedometer cable.

  1. Disconnect the wiring harness and the speedometer cable. Remove the gauge assembly.

  1. Individual instruments may be removed from the cluster after it is removed from the car. Avoid damage to any terminals or the printed circuit board.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Install the gauge cluster; connect the wiring and speedometer cable before it is fully in place. Install the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the panel, making sure it is squarely set and properly seated. Install the retaining screws at the top and the bottom.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper lid.
  6.  
  7. Connect the wiring to each switch. Reinstall the switches, making sure they are firmly seated in place.
  8.  

1990-95 Accord

See Figures 7, 8 and 9

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. If so equipped, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
  2.  
  3. Lower the steering wheel to its lowest position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the center console.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ashtray and ashtray holder.
  8.  
  9. Remove the radio/tape player.
  10.

  1. Remove the coin box, switches and dash light controller from the instrument panel.
  2.  
  3. On models through 1993, remove the side and center air vents.
  4.  
  5. Remove the mounting screws securing the instrument panel. This is a large, formed piece of plastic-don't crack it.
  6.

  1. Lay a protective piece of cloth over the steering wheel pad.
  2.  
  3. Remove the four screws holding the instrument cluster. Pull the cluster forward enough to allow access to the wiring connectors.

  1. Disconnect the wiring harnesses and remove the instrument cluster.
  2.  
  3. Individual instruments may be removed from the cluster after it is removed from the car. Avoid damage to any terminals or the printed circuit board.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Install the gauge cluster; connect the wiring before it is fully in place. Install the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the instrument panel. Make sure it is correctly placed. Install the retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. If applicable, install the air vents.
  6.  
  7. Install the coin box, switches and dash light controller.
  8.  
  9. Install the radio, ashtray holder and ashtray.
  10.  
  11. Install the console.
  12.  
  13. If applicable, enable the SRS.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

1984-87 Prelude
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Lower the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower dash panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four screws securing the instrument panel. Gently pull the panel away from the dash. Reach behind it and unplug the wiring connectors to the switches.
  8.  
  9. Remove the panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two screws holding the gauge assembly. They are reached from under the dash and thread upwards.
  12.  
  13. Lift the gauge assembly; disconnect the wiring and the speedometer cable.
  14.  
  15. Remove the gauge assembly.
  16.  
  17. Individual instruments may be removed from the cluster after it is removed from the car. Avoid damage to any terminals or the printed circuit board.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Install the gauge cluster; connect the wiring and speedometer cable before it is fully in place. Install the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. With the instrument panel loosely in place, connect the wiring to each switch or control.
  4.  
  5. Install the panel, making sure it is properly seated. Install the retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower dash panel and reposition the steering wheel if necessary.
  8.  

1988-91 Prelude

See Figure 10

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Lower the steering wheel to its lowest position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the dash light brightness controller and remove the headlight/foglight switch assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the five screws securing the instrument panel. Pull the panel away from the dash until the wires and connectors can be reached and disconnected.
  8.

  1. Remove the four screws holding the gauge assembly and pull the assembly outward a bit. Unplug the wiring connectors without pulling on the wiring.
  2.  
  3. Remove the gauge assembly.
  4.  
  5. Individual instruments may be removed from the cluster after it is removed from the car. Avoid damage to any terminals or the printed circuit board.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the gauge cluster; connect the wiring before it is fully in place. Install the retaining screws. Be careful not to pinch any wiring during installation.
  2.  
  3. Install the panel and the five screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the dash light controller and the lighting switches.
  6.  

1992-95 Prelude

See Figures 11, 12, 13 and 14

  1. Disconnect the battery cables, then disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
  2.  
  3. Remove the tweeter covers from the dashboard.
  4.

  1. Remove the screws securing the instrument panel visor.

  1. Remove the screws and black face panel, then unplug the connector from the clock reset switch.
  2.

  1. Place a protective piece of cloth over the dashboard.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screws securing the gauge assembly, then pull it out slightly and unplug the connectors.
  4.

  1. Individual instruments may be removed from the cluster after it is removed from the car. Avoid damage to any terminals or the printed circuit board.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Position the cluster on the dash and engage the wiring. Install the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Connect the wiring for the clock reset switch and install the black face panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the dash visor and tweeter covers.
  6.  
  7. Enable the SRS, then connect the battery cables.
  8.
