Honda Accord/Prelude 1984-1995 Repair Guide

Adjustments

SHIFTER LINKAGE

On 1984-89 Accords and 1984-87 Preludes, the rods running between the shift lever and the transaxle are not adjustable. Trouble or stiffness in the mechanism is repaired by cleaning, lubrication or the replacement of worn bushings, seals, etc.

Later cars use a set of two cables rather than fixed-length rods to transfer the motion of the shifter. The cables are adjustable, but the need for adjustment is rare. The cables rarely go out of adjustment; altering their settings should only be considered in cases of collision repair or cable replacement. Even if the transaxle is removed, the cables may be disconnected without altering their settings.

See Figures 1 and 2

The select cable is on the driver's side of the shifter; the shift cable is on the right side of the shift lever.

  1. Firmly set the parking brake, block the wheels and place the shifter in Neutral.
  2.
  3. Remove the console.
  4.
  5. At the select cable, measure the distance from the center of the mounting eye (at the shift lever) to the face just behind the locking clip (horseshoe clip). Correct distance should be 8.37-8.4 in. (212.5-213.5mm).
  6.

  1. At the shift cable, measure the same interval. Correct distance is 6.86-6.90 in. (174.3-175.3mm).

  1. If either cable is out of adjustment, remove the cotter pin holding the cable to the shifter, remove the plastic

washer (take note of its correct position) and disconnect the cable from the shifter.

  1. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster until the correct dimension is achieved. Measure the distance carefully each time and turn the adjuster in small increments.
  2.
  3. Once the measurement is correct, tighten the locknut firmly.
  4.
  5. Install the cable to the shift lever. Install the plastic washer and install a new cotter pin.
  6.
  7. Check the operation of the gearshift lever. Reinstall the console.

1988-95 Prelude

See Figures 3 and 4

The select cable is on the right side of the shift lever; the gearshift cable is closest to the driver.

  1. Firmly set the parking brake, block the wheels and place the shifter in Neutral.
  2.
  3. Remove the console.
  4.
  5. With the transaxle in Neutral, inspect the select cable adjustment. The groove in the lever bracket must align with the index mark or notch on the cable housing. The mark is between the adjusting sleeve and the connection to the shifter.

  1. If the marks do not align, loosen the two locknuts on the adjuster sleeve and turn the adjuster as necessary.

Fig. Fig. 4: Cable adjustment on Preludes

  1. When the marks align, tighten the locknuts on the adjuster. Inspect the threads projecting out of the adjuster; no more than 0.4 in. (10mm) of threads must be exposed.
  2.
  3. Check the operation of the shifter.
  4.
  5. Inspect the adjustment of the gearshift cable. Place the shift lever in 4th gear.
  6.
  7. Measure the clearance between the lever bracket and the front edge of the stopper while pushing the lever forward. There is an inspection hole in the front of the bracket for using an insertable measuring tool. Clearance must be 0.24-0.28 in. (6.0-7.0mm).
  8.
  9. If the clearance is incorrect, loosen the two locknuts on the adjuster sleeve and turn the adjuster as necessary.
  10.
  11. When the correct clearance is gained, tighten the locknuts on the adjuster. Inspect the threads projecting out of the adjuster; no more than 0.4 in. (10mm) of threads must be exposed.
  12.
  13. Check the operation of the shifter. Reinstall the console.
