Honda Accord/Prelude 1984-1995 Repair Guide

Back-up Light Switch

See Figures 1 and 2

The reverse light switch is externally mounted on the transaxle case. To remove it, place the shifter in Neutral. Elevate and safely support the car. Unplug the wiring connectors. Remove the switch and washer by unscrewing it from the case.

Once removed, the switch may be easily tested with an ohmmeter. Connect one probe to each switch lead. In the normal position, there should be no continuity. With the tip or plunger of the switch pressed in, the switch should show continuity.

When installing, ALWAYS replace the washer between the switch and the case. It not only guards against oil leaks, but also sets the reach of the switch inside the transaxle. Install the switch and tighten it to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Connect the wiring and lower the vehicle to the ground.
