REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Trailing Arm
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the lug nuts for the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. Support the lower control arm using a jack.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nuts/bolts securing the trailing arm to the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the pivot bolt, then remove the trailing arm.
  14.  
  15. Install in reverse order. When installing, make certain the passages in the bushings and the bolts are clean and lightly lubricated. Install the nuts and bolts finger-tight, but do not apply final torque until the vehicle is on the ground. Refer to the component torque illustrations at the end of this section to determine the proper specification.

  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  

Upper Control Arm
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the lug nuts for the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the upper ball joint. Use a ball joint separator to remove the ball joint from the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper control arm mounting bolts and the upper control arm.
  14.  
  15. Position the upper arm on the vehicle and install the mounting bolts. Refer to the component torque illustrations at the end of this section for the proper specification.

  17. Connect the ball joint. Install and tighten the nut to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm), then install a new cotter pin.
  18.  
  19. Install the wheel; lower the car to the ground.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  

Lower Control Arm
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the lug nuts for the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. If applicable, disconnect the sway bar from the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. If applicable, remove the bolts securing the trailing arm to the lower control arm.
  12.  
  13. On some models, a ball joint connects the arm to the knuckle. If so, remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the ball joint, then separate the ball joint from the knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the remaining lower arm mounting bolts and remove the lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. Install in reverse order. Refer to the component torque illustrations at the end of this section for the proper specification. Any nut/bolts connected to rubber mounts or bushings should not be fully torqued until the vehicle is on the ground.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
