CAUTION
The Honda Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) contains brake fluid under extremely high pressure within the pump, accumulator and modulator assembly. Do not disconnect or loosen any lines, hoses, fittings or components without properly relieving the system pressure. Use only a bleeder T-wrench 07HAA-SG00100, or equivalent, to relieve pressure. Improper procedures or failure to discharge the system pressure may result in severe personal injury and/or property damage.

Honda vehicles have a tandem master cylinder that is used to improve the safety of the vehicle. The master cylinder has one reservoir tank with two feed holes at the bottom of the tank to feed both the primary and secondary circuit.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Detach the electrical connectors from the master cylinder.
  4.  
  5. Remove the master cylinder reservoir cap.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake fluid from the master cylinder using a siphon or clean turkey baster.
  8.  


CAUTION
Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with the eyes and wash your hands thoroughly after handling brake fluid. If you do get brake fluid in your eyes, flush your eyes with clean, running water for 15 minutes. If eye irritation persists, or if you have taken brake fluid internally, IMMEDIATELY seek medical assistance.

  1. Use a flare nut wrench to disconnect the fluid lines from the master cylinder.
  2.  


WARNING
Be careful not to bend the lines upon removal of the master cylinder.

  1. Unfasten the mounting nuts that attach the master cylinder to the booster, then remove the master cylinder from the brake booster.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Install the master cylinder in the reverse order of removal.
  2.  
  3. Fill the master cylinder with an approved DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid.
  4.  
  5. Properly bleed the master cylinder, as outlined in this section.
  6.  

BENCH BLEEDING




WARNING
Avoid spilling brake fluid on paint. It will damage most finishes. If a spill does occur, wash it immediately with water and absorbent cloth.

If the master cylinder is off the vehicle, it can be bench bled.

  1. Secure the master cylinder in a bench vise.
  2.  
  3. Place a suitable catch pan under the master cylinder, to collect any fluid seepage.
  4.  
  5. Connect 2 short sections of brake line to the outlet fittings. Carefully bend them until the open end is below the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoirs.
  6.  
  7. Fill the reservoir with fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 type brake fluid.
  8.  
  9. Using a wooden dowel, or equivalent, pump the piston slowly several times until no more air bubbles appear in the reservoirs.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the 2 short lines, refill the master cylinder and securely install the cylinder cap.
  12.  
  13. If the master cylinder is on the vehicle, it can still be bled as follows:
    1. Using a flare nut wrench open one brake line at a time 1 / 4 turn with a flare nut wrench.
    2.  
    3. Have an assistant press the brake pedal to the floor and hold it there, then tighten the brake line and have the assistant slowly release the brake pedal.
    4.  
    5. Check the reservoir fluid level and top off as necessary.
    6.  
    7. Repeat the above procedures on all of the lines until the dispersed fluid is free of all air bubbles.

Always tighten the line before the brake pedal is released.

  1. Once the master cylinder is bled, flush the surrounding area with water to neutralize the brake fluid.
  2.  
  3. Bleed the complete brake system, if necessary.
  4.  

If the master cylinder has been thoroughly bled and filled to the proper level upon installation into the vehicle, it should not be necessary to bleed the entire hydraulic system.
