TESTING

3.0L Engine
  1. Remove the cover for the ignition coil.
  2.
  3. Detach the electrical connectors from all 6 ignition coils.
  4.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and measure the voltage at the black/yellow wire for each connector. If voltage is present, go to the next step. If voltage is not present, repair the open circuit in the wire between the ignition coil and fuse No. 11 in the left side under dash fuse panel.
  6.
  7. Turn the ignition switch OFF and check for continuity between the black wire and ground. If ground is present, go to the next step. If ground is not present, repair the open circuit in the wire between the ignition coil and the body ground.
  8.
  9. Detach the 31-pin connector from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Hold the 31-pin multi-connector such that the wire connectors are visible, with the locking tab on top. The first row of connectors from left to right are numbered 1 through 10. On the second row, the number 11 slot is empty and the remaining connectors are numbered 12 through 22. The third row is numbered 23 though 31, with slot number 24 empty. Check the following wires from the provided pin location for continuity to ground. If there is not continuity go to the next step. If there is continuity, repair the short in the wire between the PCM and the ignition coil.

Blue, pin location No. 3 to ground

Yellow/green, pin location No. 4 to ground

    Black/red, pin location No. 12

Yellow, pin location No. 13 to ground

    Red, pin location No. 14

White/blue, pin location No. 23 to ground

  10.
  11. Reconnect the PCM multi-plug connector. With the ignition switch in the start position, check for voltage at the multi-plug connector for each ignition coil for the following wires: blue, yellow/green, black/red, yellow, red, and white/blue. If the measured voltage is 0.5 volts, replace the ignition coil. If no voltage is measured, repair the open circuit in the wire between the PCM and the ignition coil.
  12.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Unfasten the retainers, then remove the ignition coil covers.
  4.
  5. Remove the multi-plug wiring harness from the ignition coil.
  6.
  7. Unfasten the ignition coil mounting bolts, then remove the ignition coil.
  8.
  9. Install in the reverse order of removal.
