Fig. Once the exhaust manifold has been installed, use a torque wrench to tighten the mounting nuts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. If the Oxygen Sensor (O 2 S) is located in the exhaust manifold, detach the O 2 S connector.
  6.
  7. Remove the exhaust manifold upper cover/heat shield.
  8.
  9. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the heat insulator from the manifold.
  10.
  11. Remove the nuts attaching the exhaust manifold to the front exhaust pipe. Separate the pipe from the manifold and discard the gasket. Support the pipe with wire; do not allow it to hang by itself.
  12.
  13. Remove the exhaust manifold bracket(s) bolts and remove the bracket(s).
  14.
  15. Using a crisscross pattern (starting from the center), remove the exhaust manifold attaching nuts.
  16.
  17. Remove the manifold and discard the gasket. Clean the manifold and cylinder head mating surfaces.
  18.
  19. If equipped, remove the lower manifold cover from the manifold.
  20.

To install:

  1. If equipped, install the lower manifold cover and tighten the attaching bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  2.
  3. Using a new gasket and nuts, place the manifold into position and support it. Install the nuts snug on the studs.
  4.
  5. Install the support bracket(s) below the manifold. Tighten the bracket(s) mounting bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  6.
  7. Starting with the manifold inner or center nuts, tighten the nuts in a crisscross pattern to the correct torque. The tension must be even across the entire face of the manifold if leaks are to be prevented. Tighten the nuts to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
  8.
  9. If equipped with air conditioning, install the heat insulator to the manifold. Tighten the attaching bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm) on Prelude models and 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm) on Accord models.
  10.
  11. Install the upper manifold cover and tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  12.
  13. If disconnected, attach the Oxygen Sensor (O 2 S) connector.
  14.
  15. Connect the front exhaust pipe using new gaskets and nuts. Tighten the exhaust pipe attaching nuts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  16.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  18.
  19. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the radiator cap and drain the cooling system into a sealable container.
  4.
  5. Remove the radiator, as outlined later in this section.
  6.
  7. Detach the starter cable from the strut tower brace. Remove the strut tower brace.
  8.
  9. If necessary for additional clearance, remove the vacuum control box on the bulkhead. Position it aside with the vacuum hoses attached.
  10.
  11. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  12.
  13. Remove the front wheels, then remove the splash shield from under the engine.
  14.
  15. Remove the center beam.
  16.
  17. Detach the front Oxygen sensor (O 2 S) electrical connector.
  18.
  19. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifolds and the catalytic converter. Discard the locknuts attaching the downpipe to the manifolds and the catalytic converter. Remove the exhaust pipe from the vehicle and discard the gaskets.
  20.
  21. Remove the bolts securing the heat shields on the exhaust manifolds.
  22.
  23. Disconnect the EGR crossover pipe from the engine.
  24.
  25. Remove the nuts securing the manifolds to the cylinder heads. Remove the manifolds and gaskets from the engine. Remove any old gasket material from the cylinder heads.
  26.

To install:

  1. Using new gaskets and nuts, place the manifolds into position. Lightly oil the threads, then install the nuts snug on the studs.
  2.
  3. Starting with the center nuts, tighten the nuts in a crisscross pattern to the correct torque. Tighten the nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the EGR crossover pipe with a new gasket. Tighten the nuts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and the exhaust manifold connection to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the heat shields to the manifolds. Tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the exhaust pipe with new nuts and gaskets. Tighten the exhaust manifold connections to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) and the catalytic converter to 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  10.
  11. Attach the front O 2 S electrical connector.
  12.
  13. Install the center beam. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  14.
  15. Install the splash shield and front wheels.
  16.
  17. Install the vacuum control box and the radiator.
  18.
  19. Install the strut tower brace and secure the starter cable. Tighten the strut tower bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  20.
  21. Fill and bleed the air from the cooling system.
  22.
  23. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  24.
  25. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Check for leaks.
  26.
