REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



The original radio may contain a coded anti-theft circuit. Always obtain the security code number before disconnecting the battery cables.

2.2L and 2.3L Engines

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil into a sealable container.
  4.  
  5. Turn the engine to align the timing marks and set cylinder No.1 to TDC. The white mark on the crankshaft pulley should align with the pointer on the timing belt cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve cover and upper timing belt cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the power steering pump belt and the alternator belt, also the air conditioning belt if so equipped.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft pulley and the lower timing belt cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the balancer belt and the timing belt. Be sure to mark the rotation of the timing belt if it is going to be reused. Refer to the procedure located in this section.
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing belt and balancer belt tensioners.
  16.  
  17. If equipped, remove the bolts mounting the CKP sensor and carefully remove the CKP sensor from the oil pump. Detach the CKP sensor connector and remove it from the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the timing belt drive pulley and key from the crankshaft.
  20.  
  21. Insert a suitable tool into the maintenance hole in the front balancer shaft and remove the balancer driven pulley.
  22.  
  23. Align the rear timing balancer pulley using a 6 x 100mm bolt or rod. Mark the bolt or rod at a point 2.9 in. (74mm) from the end. Remove the bolt from the maintenance hole on the side of the block; insert the bolt/rod into the hole. Align the 74mm mark with the face of the hole. This pin will hold the shaft in place.

  25. Remove the balancer gear case and the dowel pins. Discard the O-ring.
  26.  
  27. Remove the balancer driven gear attaching bolt and the balancer driven gear.
  28.  
  29. Remove the oil pan and the oil screen. Discard the screen gasket.
  30.  
  31. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts and remove the oil pump assembly. Remove the dowel pins from the engine and clean the oil pump mating surfaces of old gasket material and oil. Discard the O-rings.
  32.  

To install:

  1. Install the 2 dowel pins and new O-rings to the cylinder block.
  2.  
  3. Be sure that the mating surfaces are clean and dry. Apply a liquid gasket evenly in a narrow bead, centered on the mating surface. Once the sealant is applied, do not wait longer than 20 minutes to install the parts; the sealant will become ineffective. After final assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before adding oil to the engine, giving the sealant time to set. To prevent leakage of oil, apply a suitable thread sealer to the inner threads of the bolt holes.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump to the engine block. Tighten the mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the oil screen. Tighten the screen mounting bolts and nuts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Install the balancer driven pulley to the front balancer belt, hold the balancer shaft in place with a suitable tool. Tighten the attaching bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the balancer driven gear to the rear balancer shaft. Tighten the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Before installing the balancer driven gear and the gear case, apply molybdenum disulfide (lithium grease) to the thrust surfaces of the balancer gears.
  16.  
  17. Align the groove on the pulley edge to the pointer on the balancer gear case.
  18.  
  19. Install the balancer gear case to the engine and install the mounting bolts and nut. The rear balancer shaft is being held in place with a 6 x 100mm bolt. Tighten the mounting bolts and nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Check the alignment of the pointer on the balancer pulley to the pointer on the oil pump.
  22.  
  23. Install the drive pulley to the crankshaft.
  24.  
  25. If equipped, connect the CKP sensor connector to the wiring harness on the engine. Install the CKP sensor to the oil pump and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the timing belt tensioners.
  28.  
  29. Install the timing belt and the balancer belt. Refer to the procedure located in this section.
  30.  
  31. Install the crankshaft pulley and the lower timing belt cover.
  32.  
  33. Install and tension the drive belts for the alternator, power steering, and air conditioning compressor.
  34.  
  35. Install the valve cover and upper timing belt cover.
  36.  
  37. Refill the engine with clean, fresh oil.
  38.  
  39. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  40.  

2.7L Engines

The radio may contain a coded theft protection circuit. Always obtain the code before disconnecting the battery.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Turn the engine to align the timing marks and set cylinder No.1 to TDC. The white mark on the crankshaft pulley should align with the pointer on the timing belt cover. Remove the inspection caps on the upper timing belt covers to check the alignment of the timing marks. The pointers for the camshafts should align with the green marks on the camshaft pulleys.

  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil into a sealable container.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front wheels and the engine splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing belt covers and the timing belt. Refer to the procedure located in this section.
  12.  
  13. Detach the CKP sensor electrical connector, then remove the CKP sensor from the oil pump.
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing belt tensioner.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stopper plate from the oil pump, then remove the timing belt drive pulley.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil filter.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the oil pressure switch terminal, then remove the oil filter base attaching bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil filter base and discard the O-rings.
  24.  
  25. Remove the oil pan.
  26.  
  27. Remove the oil screen and baffle plate.
  28.  
  29. Remove the oil pass pipe attaching bolts, then remove the pipe from the oil pump. Discard the O-rings.
  30.  
  31. Remove the bolts from the oil pump. Note the location of the bolts.
  32.  
  33. Remove the oil pump and dowel pins from the engine.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Install the 2 dowel pins to the cylinder block.
  2.  
  3. Be sure that the mating surfaces are clean and dry. Apply a liquid gasket evenly in a narrow bead centered on the mating surface. Once the sealant is applied, do not wait longer than 20 minutes to install the parts; the sealant will become ineffective. After final assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before adding oil to the engine, giving the sealant time to set.   5. Apply grease to the lips of the crankshaft oil seal. Install the oil pump to the engine block. Tighten the 6mm mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and tighten the 8mm mounting bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Clean any excess grease from the crankshaft and check that the seal lips are not distorted.
  6.  
  7. Install new O-rings to the oil pass pipe, then install the pass pipe to the oil pump and the crankshaft bridge. Tighten the attaching bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the baffle plate. Tighten the baffle plate mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the oil screen with a new O-ring. Tighten the screen mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pan.
  14.  
  15. Install new O-rings to the oil filter base and install the oil filter base to the engine. Tighten the mounting bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Connect the oil pressure switch terminal. Tighten the attaching bolt to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the oil filter.
  20.  
  21. Install the timing belt drive pulley and the stopper plate. Tighten the stopper plate mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the timing belt tensioner.
  24.  
  25. Install the CKP sensor to the oil pump and connect the electrical connector. Tighten the mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the timing belt and the timing belt covers. Refer to the procedure located in this section.
  28.  
  29. Install the engine splash shield and the front wheels.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle and fill the engine with oil.
  32.  
  33. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  34.  
  35. Run the engine and check for leaks.
  36.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
  4.  
  5. Turn the crankshaft to position the No. 1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke.
  6.  
  7. Remove the timing belt. Refer to the procedure located in this section.
  8.  
  9. Remove the idler pulley.
  10.  
  11. Remove the CKP sensor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the VTEC solenoid valve and the oil filter.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pan and pick-up.
  16.  
  17. Remove the oil pump assembly.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install a new crankshaft seal in the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Apply sealant to the oil pump mounting surface and bolt holes on the engine block.
  4.  
  5. Grease the lip of the new seal and apply engine oil to the o-ring.
  6.  
  7. Install the dowel pin and oil pump while aligning the inner rotor with the crankshaft. Tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pump pick-up. Tighten the mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the oil pan, VTEC solenoid, oil filter, CKP, and idler pulley.
  12.  
  13. Install the timing belt. Refer to the procedure located in this section.
  14.  


WARNING
Operating the engine without the proper amount and type of engine oil will result in severe engine damage.

  1. Fill the crankcase with the proper amount of new engine oil.
