The original radio contains a coded anti-theft circuit. Obtain the security code number before disconnecting the battery cables.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  4.
  5. Remove the accessory drive belts, the valve cover, and the upper timing belt cover.
  6.
  7. Set the timing at TDC/compression for the No. 1 piston.
  8.
  9. Remove the crankshaft pulley and lower timing belt cover.
  10.
  11. Remove the timing belt. Replace the timing belt if it is contaminated with oil or coolant or shows any signs of wear and damage. Refer to the procedure located in this section.
  12.
  13. If equipped with a Crankshaft Speed Fluctuation (CKF) sensor at the crankshaft sprocket, unbolt the sensor bracket and move the sensor out of the way. Cover the sensor with a shop towel to keep coolant off of it.
  14.
  15. Unbolt the water pump and remove it from the engine block.
  16.

To install:

  1. Clean the water pump and O-ring mating surfaces before installation.
  2.
  3. Install the water pump with a new O-ring. Coat only the bolt threads with liquid gasket and tighten them to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the timing belt. Be sure it is fitted and adjusted properly. Refer to the procedure located in this section.
  6.
  7. If equipped, install the CKF sensor and tighten the bracket bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the lower belt cover and crankshaft pulley.
  10.
  11. Install the upper timing belt cover, the valve cover, and the accessory drive belts.
  12.
  13. Be sure the cooling system drain plug is closed. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  14.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  16.
  17. Start the engine, allow it to reach normal operating temperature, and check for coolant leaks.
  18.

2.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Drain the coolant into a sealable container.
  4.
  5. Remove the timing belt covers and the timing belt. Refer to the procedure located in this section.
  6.
  7. Remove the timing belt tensioner.
  8.
  9. Remove the 9 water pump bolts, take note of their locations for reinstallation.
  10.
  11. Remove the water pump from the engine and discard the O-ring. Remove the dowel pins.
  12.

To install:

  1. Clean the water pump mounting surface and O-ring groove, then install the dowel pins to the engine.
  2.
  3. Install a new O-ring to the engine, then install the water pump. Be careful not to pinch the O-ring. Install the mounting bolts to their original locations. When tightening the bolts, be sure that the O-ring does not bulge out of the groove. Tighten the 6mm bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm), and tighten the 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  4.
