Relieving Fuel System Pressure

CAUTION
Be sure that the ignition switch is OFF before relieving the fuel system. Never work near an open flame, a source of sparks or smoke while working on the fuel system!

PROCEDURE



Accord
1996 4-CYLINDER ENGINES

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel filler cap.
  4.  

Place a shop towel over the service bolt to absorb any fuel that may spray out as the bolt is loosened.

  1. Place a 6mm box-end wrench, over the service bolt on the fuel rail, while holding the banjo bolt with a back-up wrench.
  2.  
  3. Slowly loosen the service bolt one complete turn.
  4.  
  5. Always replace the service or banjo bolt sealing washers whenever the bolt is loosened.
  6.  
  7. After the fuel system pressure is relieved, tighten the bolt, install the fuel filler cap, then connect the negative battery cable.

1997 4-CYLINDER ENGINES

To relieve the fuel system pressure on these vehicles, please refer to the procedure for Prelude models.

1996-97 V6 ENGINES

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel filler cap.
  4.  

Place a shop towel over the service bolt to absorb any fuel that may spray out as the bolt is loosened.

  1. If equipped with a service bolt, place a 6mm box-end wrench, over the service bolt on the fuel filter, while holding the banjo bolt with a back-up wrench.
  2.  
  3. If not equipped with a service bolt, place a box-end wrench over the banjo bolt on the fuel filter.
  4.  
  5. Slowly loosen the service or banjo bolt one complete turn.
  6.  
  7. Always replace the service or banjo bolt sealing washers whenever the bolt is loosened.
  8.  
  9. After the fuel system pressure is relieved, tighten the service bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm) or the banjo bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm),
  10.  
  11. Install the fuel filler cap, then connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

1998-00 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel filler cap.
  4.  
  5. Use a wrench to loosen the fuel pulsation damper on the fuel rail near the throttle linkage.

Fig. Place a rag over the fuel pulsation damper (A), protect the throttle linkage (B), using a wrench, loosen the damper to relieve the residual fuel pressure.

  1. Place a shop towel over the fuel pulsation damper to absorb any fuel that may leak out as the damper is loosened.
  2.  
  3. Slowly unscrew the fuel pulsation damper one turn.
  4.  
  5. Always replace the sealing washer whenever the fuel pulsation damper loosened.
  6.  
  7. After the fuel system pressure is relieved, tighten the fuel pulsation damper, install the fuel filler cap, then connect the negative battery cable.

This procedure also covers 1997 4-cylinder Accord models.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel filler cap.
  4.  

Place a shop towel over the service bolt to absorb any fuel that may spray out as the bolt is loosened.

  1. Using a 12mm box-end wrench, loosen the service bolt (sealing bolt) from the fuel rail.
  2.  
  3. Slowly unscrew the banjo bolt one turn.
  4.  
  5. Always replace the banjo bolt sealing washers whenever the bolt is loosened.
  6.  
  7. After the fuel system pressure is relieved, tighten the bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm), install the fuel filler cap, then connect the negative battery cable.
