REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Accord
  1. Remove the strut, as outlined later in this section.
  2.  
  3. Place the strut in a vice and install a spring compressor onto the coil spring. Follow the spring compressor manufacturer's instructions.
  4.  
  5. Compress the spring and remove the self-locking nut from the strut. Disassemble the strut mounts and remove the coil spring.
  6.  
  7. Inspect the strut mounts for wear and damage. Replace any damaged or worn parts.
  8.  

To install:

Use new self-locking nuts when assembling and installing the struts.

  1. Install the spring compressor onto the coil spring. Set the spring onto the strut cartridge. The flat part of the coil spring is its top.
  2.  
  3. Assemble the strut mount and washer onto the strut. Tighten the self-locking nut to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm). Remove the spring compressor.
  4.  
  5. Install the strut into the vehicle. Hand-tighten the mounting nuts.
  6.  
  7. Fit the strut into position on the knuckle. Install the mounting bolt.
  8.  
  9. Place a jack under the lower strut mount. Raise the jack until the weight of the vehicle is on the jack.
  10.  
  11. With the suspension under load, tighten the lower mount bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm). Tighten the upper nuts to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the rear wheel. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the wheel nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the rear seat side bolsters and fold the seat back into place.
  18.  
  19. Check and adjust the vehicle's rear wheel alignment.

Prelude
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the trunk side trim and remove the two strut mounting nuts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper ball joint cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pin and upper ball joint nut.
  8.  
  9. Fit a 10mm nut on the ball joint and separate the ball joint and the knuckle by using a ball joint removal tool.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower strut mounting bolt and lower the suspension.
  12.  
  13. Remove the strut from the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Place the strut in vice and install a spring compressor onto the coil spring. Follow the spring compressor manufacturer's instructions.
  16.  
  17. Compress the spring and remove the self-locking nut from the strut. Disassemble the strut mounts and remove the coil spring.
  18.  
  19. Inspect the strut mounts for wear and damage. Replace any damaged or worn parts.
  20.  

To install:

Use new self-locking nuts when installing the rear struts.

  1. Install the spring compressor onto the coil spring. Set the spring onto the strut cartridge. The flat part of the coil spring is its top.
  2.  
  3. Assemble the strut mount and washer onto the strut. Tighten the self-locking nut to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm). Remove the spring compressor.
  4.  
  5. Install the strut to the vehicle and loosely install the lower mounting bolt. Do not tighten at this time.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper strut mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the upper arm and knuckle and tighten the castle nut to 29-35 ft. lbs. (40-48 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the upper ball joint cover.
  12.  
  13. Raise the rear suspension with a floor jack until the weight is on the strut.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the lower strut mounting bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the rear wheels and lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the rear wheel nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the trunk trim.
  22.  
  23. Check and adjust the vehicle's rear wheel alignment.
  24.
