Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Honda Accord 2007-2008

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front tires.
  4.  
  5. Remove the damper fork from the damper and the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flange nut while holding the ball joint pin. Disconnect the stabilizer links from the lower arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cotter pin from the lower arm ball joint. Remove the castle nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower arm ball joint from the knuckle, using the ball joint removal tool.
  12.  
  13. Remove the flange bolts and remove the lower arm from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Insert the damper fork into the damper lower end, so the aligning tab is aligned with the slot in the damper fork. Replace the damper fork retaining nut, with a new one.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to use new flange bolts, castle nut and lock pin.
  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.
  8.  

Specific to:

Honda Civic 2007-2008

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the front tires.
  2.  
  3. Remove the flange nut while holding the ball joint pin. Disconnect the stabilizer links from the lower arm.
  4.  
  5. Turn the stabilizer bar backward to gain access to the front side of the lower arm mounting bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flange bolt and nuts from the lower arm.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the lower ball joint from the lower arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower arm mounting bolts. Remove the lower arm from the front suspension subframe.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new flange bolts, castle nut and lock pin. Tighten the flange nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Check and adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.
  6.  

Specific to:

Honda S2000 2007-2008

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the front tires.
  2.  
  3. Remove the flange nut while holding the ball joint pin. Disconnect the stabilizer links from the lower arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flange bolt and nuts from the lower arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pin from the lower arm ball joint. Remove the castle nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower arm ball joint from the knuckle, using the ball joint removal tool.
  10.  
  11. Remove the self locking nut and self locking cam nut. Remove the cam plate adjusting bolt, cam collar, flange bolt and the lower arm.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new flange bolts, castle nut and lock pin.
  4.  
  5. Check and adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.

Specific to:

Honda Fit 2007-2008

  1. Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lock pin from the lower arm ball joint, then remove the nut.
    NOTE
    During installation, install the new lock pin after tightening the new castle nut.

  8.  
  9. Disconnect the lower ball joint from the knuckle using the ball joint remover.
    WARNING
    When removing the lower ball joint, do not pull the driveshaft end outward. The inner driveshaft joint may come apart.

  10.  
  11. Remove the lower arm mounting bolts, then remove the lower arm from the front subframe.

To install:


NOTE
During installation, install new mounting bolts.

  1. Install the lower arm in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:
    1. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the knuckle.
    2.  
    3. Before connecting the lower ball joint to the knuckle, degrease the threaded section and tapered portion of the ball joint pin, the lower arm connecting hole, the threaded section and mating surface of the castle nut.
    4.  
    5. First install all the components and lightly tighten the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension to load it with the vehicle's weight before fully tightening to the specified torque values.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the three lower arm mounting bolts to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm). Tighten the top mounting bolts to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).

  3. Torque the castle nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm), then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the ball joint pin hole. Do not align the castle nut by loosening it.
  4.  
  5. Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surface of the brake disc and the inside of the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary.
