CV-Joint Boots



Inspection
Inboard Joint

Specific to:

Honda Accord 2007-2008

Honda Civic 2007-2008

  1. Remove the set ring.
  2.  
  3. Remove the boot bands as follows:
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the boot and dynamic damper.



    If the boot band is a welded type, cut the boot band.
     
    If the boot band is a double loop type, lift up the band end, and push it into the clip.
     
    If the boot band is a low profile type, pinch the boot band using commercially available boot band pliers.
     

  4.  
  5. Make a mark on each roller and inboard joint to identify the locations of rollers and grooves in the inboard joint. Then remove the inboard joint on the shop towel. Be careful not to drop the rollers when separating them from the inboard joint.

  7. Matchmark the rollers and spider to identify the locations of the rollers on the spider, the remove the rollers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the circlip.
  10.  
  11. Matchmark the spider to the halfshaft to identify the position of the spider on the shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the spider.

  15. Wrap the splines on the halfshaft with vinyl tape to prevent damage to the boot.
  16.  
  17. Remove the inboard boot. Be careful not to damage the boot.
  18.  
  19. Remove the vinyl tape.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Wrap the splines with vinyl tape to prevent damage to the inboard boot.
  2.  
  3. Install the inboard boot onto the halfshaft and then remove the vinyl tape. Be careful not to damage the inboard boot.
  4.  
  5. Install the spider onto the halfshaft by aligning the marks you made on the spider and the end of the halfshaft.
  6.  
  7. Install a new circlip into the halfshaft groove. Always rotate the circlip in its groove to make sure it is fully seated.
  8.  
  9. Fit the rollers onto the spider with the high shoulders facing outward, aligning the matchmarks.
  10.  
  11. Pack the inboard joint with the joint grease included in the new inboard boot set.
  12.  
  13. Fit the inboard joint onto the halfshaft aligning the matchmarks.
  14.  
  15. Fit the boot ends onto the halfshaft and the inboard joint.
  16.  
  17. Adjust the length of the halfshafts to the figure as shown, and then adjust the boots to halfway between full compression and full extension.

  19. Install the boot bands.

Outboard Joint

Honda Accord 2007-2008

Honda Civic 2007-2008

  1. Remove the boot bands by lifting up the three tabs with a screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the boot and dynamic damper.
  2.  
  3. Slide the outboard boot partially to the inboard joint side. Be careful not to damage the boot.
  4.  
  5. Wipe off the grease to expose the halfshaft and the outboard joint inner race.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the halfshaft at the same level as the outboard joint rim.

  9. Securely clamp the halfshaft in a bench vise with a shop towel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the outboard joint using the threaded adapter and a commercially available 5 / 8 inch-18 UNF slide hammer.
  12.  
  13. Remove the halfshaft from the bench vise.
  14.  
  15. Remove the stop ring from the halfshaft.
  16.  
  17. Wrap the splines on the halfshaft with vinyl tape to prevent damaging the boot.
  18.  
  19. Remove the outboard boot. Be careful not to damage the boot.
  20.  
  21. Remove the vinyl tape.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Wrap the splines with vinyl tape to prevent damaging the outboard boot.
  2.  
  3. Install the new ear clamp bands and outboard boot, and then remove the vinyl tape. Be careful not to damage the outboard boot.
  4.  
  5. Install the new stop ring in the halfshaft groove.
  6.  
  7. Pack about half of the grease included in the new outboard boot set into the halfshaft hole in the outboard joint.
  8.  
  9. Insert the halfshaft into the outboard joint until the stop ring is close to the joint.
  10.  
  11. To completely seat the outboard joint, pick up the halfshaft and joint, and tap or hit them from a height of about 4 in. (10 cm) onto a hard surface.

  13. Check the alignment of the paint mark you made with the outboard joint rim.
  14.  
  15. Pack the outboard joint with the remaining joint grease included in the new outboard boot set.
  16.  
  17. Fit the boot ends onto the halfshaft and outboard joint.
  18.  
  19. Close the ear portion of the band with commercially available boot band pliers.
  20.  
  21. Check the clearance between the closed ear portion of the band. If the clearance is not within the 0.12 in. (3 mm), close the ear portion of the band tighter.
  22.  
  23. Repeat the process for the band on the other side of the boot.
