  16.
  17. Remove the heat shield, if equipped with automatic transmission.
  18.
  19. If removing the left halfshaft:
    1. Pry the inboard joint from the transmission housing with a prybar.
    2.
    3. Remove the halfshaft as an assembly.
    4.

  20.
  21. If removing the right halfshaft:
    1. If equipped with manual transmission: Drive the inboard joint off of the intermediate shaft using a drift and hammer.
    2.
    3. If equipped with automatic transmission: Pry the inboard joint from the transmission housing with a prybar.
    4.
    5. Remove the halfshaft as an assembly.
    6.

  22.

To install:

  1. Apply about 0.18 oz moly 60 paste (P/N 08734-0001) to the contact area of the outboard joint and the front wheel bearing.
  2.
  3. Install a new set ring onto the set ring groove of the halfshaft.
  4.
  5. If equipped with manual transmission: Apply 0.02-0.04 oz of grease to the whole splined surface of the right halfshaft. After applying grease, remove the grease from the splined grooves at intervals of 2-3 splines and from the set ring groove so that air can bleed from the intermediate shaft.
  6.
  7. Clean the areas where the halfshaft contacts the differential thoroughly with solvent or brake cleaner, and dry with compressed air.
  8.
  9. Insert the inboard end of the halfshaft into the differential or intermediate shaft until the set ring locks in the groove.

  10.
  11. Install the outboard joint into the front hub.
  12.
  13. If equipped with automatic transmission, install the heat shield and tighten the mounting bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  14.
  15. Clean off any grease contamination from the ball joint tapered section and threads, and then install the knuckle onto the lower arm.
    WARNING
Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot.

  16.
  17. Wipe off the grease before tightening the nut at the ball joint. Tighten the new castle nut to 65-72 ft. lbs. (88-98 Nm), and then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the ball joint pin hole.
  18.
  19. Install a new cotter pin into the ball joint pin hole.
  20.
  21. Install the damper fork over the halfshaft and onto the lower arm. Install the damper in the damper fork so the aligning tab is aligned with the slot in the damper fork. Loosely install the flange bolt.
  22.
  23. Loosely install the flange bolt and a new self-locking nut.
  24.
  25. Connect the front stabilizer link to the lower arm.
  26.
  27. Apply a small amount of engine oil to the seating surface of the new spindle nut.
  28.
  29. Install a new spindle nut, and then tighten the nut as follows:

2007 Automatic transmission: 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm)

2007 Manual transmission: 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm)

    2008 Models: 242 ft. lbs. (328 Nm)

  30.
  31. After tightening, use a drift to stake the spindle nut shoulder against the halfshaft.
  32.
  33. Install the front wheels.
  34.
  35. Turn the front wheel by hand, and make sure there is no interference between the halfshaft and surrounding parts.
  36.
  37. Tighten the flange bolt and the self-locking nut with the vehicle's weight on the damper.
  38.
  39. Refill the transmission with the recommended transmission fluid.
  40.
  41. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment as necessary.
