Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Honda Accord 2007


CAUTION
The models covered by this manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in the Chassis Electrical Section.

  1. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the radio or the navigation system (if equipped), and then write down the audio channel presets.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable to disable the airbag. Wait at least 3 minutes to begin work.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Steering Wheel, Removal and Installation.-
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering column covers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering joint cover.
  10.  
  11. Release the tilt/telescopic lever, and adjust the steering column to full tilt up position, and to the full telescopic in position.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the tilt/telescopic lever.
  14.  
  15. Hold the slider shaft on the column with a piece of wire between the joint yoke of the slider shaft and joint yoke of the upper shaft to prevent the slider shaft from pulling out.
  16.  
  17. Release the tilt/telescopic lever, adjust the steering column to the full telescopic out position, then tighten the tilt/telescopic lever.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the wire harness connectors from the combination switch assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the combination switch assembly from the steering column shaft by removing the screws.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the connectors from the ignition switch, and release the wire harness clips from the steering column.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering joint bolt, and then disconnect the steering joint from the pinion shaft.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering column by removing the attaching nuts and bolts.
  28.  
  29. Center-punch each of the two shear bolts, and drill their heads off with a 3 / 16 in. drill bit. Be careful not to damage the switch body when removing the shear bolts.

  31. Remove the shear bolts from the switch body.
  32.  

To install:

  1. Install the switch body without the key inserted.
  2.  
  3. Loosely tighten the new shear bolts.
  4.  
  5. Insert the ignition key, and check for proper operation of the steering wheel lock and that the ignition key turns freely.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the shear bolts until the hex heads twist off.
  8.  
  9. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.

Honda Accord 2008

  15. Remove the combination switch assembly/cable reel from the steering column shaft by removing the three screws.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the connectors from the ignition switch, and release the wire harness clips from the steering column.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering column by removing the attaching nuts and bolts.
  20.  
  21. Center-punch each of the two shear bolts, and drill their heads off with a 3 / 16 in. drill bit. Be careful not to damage the switch body when removing the shear bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the shear bolts from the switch body.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the switch body without the key inserted.
  2.  
  3. Loosely tighten the new shear bolts.
  4.  
  5. Insert the ignition key, and check for proper operation of the steering wheel lock and that the ignition key turns freely.
