Transaxle Removal & Installation 1

Specific to:

Honda Civic 2007-2008

  1. The radio may contain a coded theft protection circuit. Always obtain the code number before disconnecting the battery.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable. Remove the battery.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cowl cover and under cowl panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Remove the harness clips and the intake air duct. Remove the battery base with the reservoir tank.
  8.  
  9. Remove the clutch bracket and carefully remove the slave cylinder. Do not depress the clutch pedal once the slave cylinder has been removed.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the backup switch electrical connector, the vehicle speed sensor, the reverse solenoid lockout connector and the harness clips.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cable bracket, and then disconnect the cables from the top of the transaxle housing. Carefully remove the cables and the bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the harness clips from the clutch cable bracket and the harness bracket. Remove the engine wire harness cover. Slide the harness forward off of the air cleaner housing mounting bracket.
  16.  
  17. Attach tool VSP02C000015, or equivalent to the holes in the cylinder head. Install the front leg of the tool on to the engine hanger in the front of the vehicle. This operation will support the engine and transaxle assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the two upper transaxle upper mounting bolts. Remove the under hood fuse/relay box and position it to the side.
  20.  
  21. Remove the ECM stay and position it to the side. Remove the clutch line clamp. Disconnect the ground cable. Remove the transaxle mount bracket bolts and nuts. Remove the transaxle mount bracket.
  22.  
  23. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  24.  
  25. Remove the splash shield. Separate the lower arm. Remove the stiffener plate and mounting bracket from the steering gearbox. Disconnect the exhaust mounting rubber.
  26.  
  27. Remove the stiffener plate and harness clip. Remove the front engine mount bracket mounting bolt and nut. Remove the lower radiator hose from the front mount bracket.
  28.  
  29. Remove the front engine mount bracket from the transaxle and engine. Remove the rear engine mount bracket mounting bolt.
  30.  
  31. Remove the middle subframe mounting bolts. Install tool VSB02C000016, or equivalent, to the subframe. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base. Attach them securely.
  32.  
  33. Remove the front suspension subframe mounting bolts and front suspension subframe. Suspend the steering gearbox to the side.
  34.  
  35. Pry out the driveshafts inboard joint. Remove the intermediate shafts.
  36.  
  37. Remove the clutch cover. Position a transaxle jack under the transaxle assembly. Remove the transaxle mounting bolts. Carefully remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Apply high temperature grease to the mainshaft splines, release fork contact points, and throwout bearing. The manufacturer recommends part No. 08798-9002, Honda Super High temp Urea Grease.
  2.  
  3. Place the transaxle on a transaxle jack and raise it to the level of the engine.
  4.  
  5. Align the transaxle and engine. Be sure the transaxle case dowel pins are securely seated. Install the transaxle retaining bolts.
  6.  
  7. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  8.  
  9. Reprogram the power window control unit as follows.
  10.  
  11. Turn the ignition switch ON. Lower the window, all the way down. Open the driver-s side door.
  12.  
  13. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Push and hold the driver-s window DOWN switch. Turn the ignition switch ON. Release the driver-s window DOWN switch. This must be done within five seconds.
  14.  
  15. Repeat the above step three more times. Wait one second.
  16.  
  17. Confirm that the AUTO UP and AUTO DOWN do not work. If they work repeat the procedure, paying close attention to the five second time limit
  18.  
  19. Move the driver-s window all the way down by holding the driver-s window DOWN switch to the AUTO DOWN position.
  20.  
  21. Pull up and hold the driver-s window UP switch to the AUTO UP position until the window reaches the fully closed position. Hold the switch for one second.
  22.  
  23. Confirm that the power window master switch has been reset by using the driver-s window AUTO UP and DOWN function.
  24.  
  25. If the AUTO UP and DOWN feature is still not working, repeat the complete procedure, paying close attention to the five second time limit.
  26.  

Specific to:

Honda Fit 2007-2008

  1. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then disconnect the positive cable. Remove the battery.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the harness clamps and the battery base.
  8.  
  9. Carefully remove the slave cylinder to avoid bending the clutch line. Do not press the clutch pedal once the slave cylinder, boot and clamp have been removed. Remove the breather tube from the clamp.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the back-up light switch 2-pin connector, then remove the harness clamps.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shift cable bracket, then disconnect the shift cables from the top of the transmission housing. Carefully remove both cables and the bracket together to avoid bending the cables.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed sensor (VSS) connector.

  17. Attach the universal eyelet to the air cleaner stay.
  18.  
  19. Remove the one upper transmission mounting bolt and lower starter motor mounting bolt.

  21. Install a proper engine hanger assembly. Lift and support the engine and transaxle assembly.
  22.  
  23. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
  24.  
  25. Drain the transmission fluid Install the drain plug with a new washer.
  26.  
  27. Remove the splash shield.
  28.  
  29. Remove the halfshafts. See -Driveshafts- in this article.
  30.  
  31. Remove the clutch cover.
  32.  
  33. Remove the steering gearbox mounting bolts, bracket, and stiffener.

  35. Remove the bolts and the power steering gearbox bracket.
  36.  
  37. Attach a nylon strap or rope to the body and around the steering gearbox to support it on both sides.
  38.  
  39. Remove the three rear transmission mount bracket bolts.
  40.  
  41. Support the front subframe with a jack.
  42.  
  43. Remove the front subframe mounting bolts and the front subframe.
  44.  
  45. Remove the rear transmission mount and the rear transmission mount bracket
  46.  
  47. Remove the front transmission mount assembly.
  48.  
  49. Remove the air cleaner bracket.
  50.  
  51. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
  52.  
  53. Remove the transmission mount bracket and ground cable.
  54.  
  55. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
  56.  
  57. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  58.  
  59. Remove the lower transmission mounting bolts.
  60.  
  61. Pull the transmission away from the engine until the transmission mainshaft clears the clutch pressure plate.
  62.  
  63. Slowly lower the transmission about 150 mm (6 in.). Check once again that all hoses and electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the transmission, then lower it all the way.
  64.  
  65. Remove the release fork from the clutch housing by squeezing the release fork set spring with pliers. Then remove the release bearing.
  66.  

To install:

  1. Make sure the two 14 x 20 mm dowel pins are installed in the clutch housing. Apply super high temp urea grease (P/N 08798-9002) to the release fork and the release bearing, and release bearing guide. Install the release fork and the release bearing, and wipe excess grease off the release bearing after install it.
  2.  
  3. Place the transmission on the transmission jack, and raise it to the engine level.
  4.  
  5. Install the five lower transmission mounting bolts. Torque to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).

  7. Lower the vehicle on a lift.
  8.  
  9. Install the transmission mount bracket (A) and ground cable (B) with new bolts and nuts as shown.

  11. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
  12.  
  13. Install the air cleaner bracket.
  14.  
  15. Install the front transmission mount assembly with new bolts and nuts as shown.

  17. Install the rear transmission mount bracket (A) and the rear transmission mount (B) with new bolts. Tighten the shorter bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm) and the longer bolt to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).

  19. Lift and support the front subframe with a jack.
  20.  
  21. Install the front subframe with new mounting bolts torqued to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm).
    NOTE
    When installing, align the reference holes in the subframe with the reference holes in the body on both sides with a screwdriver or tapered punch.

  23. Install the three rear transmission mount bracket with new bolts (two from the top and one from the bottom). Torque the bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).

  25. Install the power steering gearbox bracket, tightening the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).

  27. Install the steering gearbox mounting bolts with the bracket (A) and stiffener (B) with new bolts as shown.

  29. Install the lower clutch cover.

  31. Install the driveshaft. See -Driveshaft- section.

  33. Install the splash shield.

  35. Refill the transmission fluid.
  36.  
  37. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
  38.  
  39. Remove the universal eyelet, the engine support hanger, and Fit engine hanger adapter.
  40.  
  41. Install one remaining upper transmission mounting bolt and lower starter motor mounting bolt. Torque the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).

  43. Connect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) connector (A).

  45. Install the shift cable bracket (A) and shift cables (B) to avoid bending the shift cables. Then install new cotter pins (C) and bend them as shown.
    NOTE
    Make sure the reference marks (D) on the shift cables come upper side.

  47. Connect the back-up light switch 2-pin connector, then install the harness clamps.
  48.  
  49. Install the protective rubber cover.
  50.  
  51. Apply super high temp urea grease (P/N 08798-9002) to the end of the slave cylinder rod. Install the slave cylinder and avoid bending the clutch line.
  52.  
  53. Align the reference mark, then install the breather tube to the clamp.
  54.  
  55. Install the battery base and harness clamps.
  56.  
  57. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  58.  
  59. Install the battery. Clean the battery posts and cable terminals. Connect the positive cable to the battery first, then connect the negative cable, and apply multipurpose grease to prevent corrosion.
  60.  
  61. Check the front wheel alignment.
  62.  
  63. Check the shift lever and clutch operation.
  64.  
  65. Test-drive the vehicle.
  66.  
  67. Enter the anti-theft codes for the audio system. Set the clock.
  68.  

2.4L Engine



Specific to:

Honda Accord 2007

  1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio and the navigation system, and then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
  2.  
  3. Set the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position, and lock in position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the battery cables and the battery.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air intake assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the battery tray.
  10.  
  11. Carefully remove the slave cylinder to avoid bending the clutch line.
    WARNING
    Do not press the clutch pedal after the slave cylinder has been removed.

  12.  
  13. Remove the change cable bracket, and then disconnect the change cables from the top of the transmission housing.
    NOTE
    Carefully remove both cables and the bracket together to avoid bending the cables.

  14.  
  15. Disconnect the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector and back-up light switch connector.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the secondary heated oxygen sensor (secondary HO2S) connector, and then remove the bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front engine mount stop and the front mount bolt.
  20.  
  21. Remove the rear engine mount stop.
  22.  
  23. Remove the upper transmission mounting bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove and plug the return hose from the power steering fluid reservoir.
  26.  
  27. Remove the power steering pump outlet line from the power steering pump.
  28.  
  29. Remove the power steering pump outlet line bracket.
  30.  
  31. Attach the engine hanger/adapter to the threaded hole in the cylinder head.

  33. Install the engine support hanger AAR-T-12566 to the vehicle, and attach the hook to the special tool adapter. Tighten the wing nut by hand, and lift and support the engine.

  35. Remove the transmission mount bracket and ground cable.
  36.  
  37. Make a reference mark across the steering joint and steering gearbox pinion shaft. Remove the steering joint bolt, and disconnect the steering joint by removing the steering joint toward the steering column. Hold the slider shaft on the column with a piece of wire between the joint yoke on the slider shaft to the joint yoke on the upper shaft.
  38.  
  39. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  40.  
  41. Remove the front wheels.
  42.  
  43. Drain the transmission fluid. Reinstall the drain plug.
  44.  
  45. Remove the splash shield.
  46.  
  47. Separate the tie rod ball joint.
  48.  
  49. Separate the front stabilizer link.
  50.  
  51. Remove the damper fork.
  52.  
  53. Separate the knuckle from the lower arm.
  54.  
  55. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  56.  
  57. Remove the exhaust pipe and the mount.
  58.  
  59. Remove the left and right driveshaft inboard joints.
  60.  
  61. Remove the intermediate shaft.
  62.  
  63. Remove the lower engine rear mount mounting bolts.
  64.  
  65. Remove the lower transmission mount mounting nuts.
  66.  
  67. Remove the subframe mid mounts from both sides.
  68.  
  69. Make the appropriate reference lines at both ends of the front subframe that line up with the edge of the stiffeners.

  71. Attach Special Tool VSB02C000016 to the front subframe with hanging the belt of the special tool over the front of the subframe, and then secure the belt with its stop.

  73. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, and then attach them with bolts securely.

  75. Remove the front suspension subframe stays and the front suspension subframe.
  76.  
  77. Remove the front engine mount upper bracket.

  79. Remove the change cable bracket, upper rear engine mount mounting bolt, and rear engine mount.
  80.  
  81. Remove the upper rear engine mount bracket.
  82.  
  83. Remove the clutch cover.
  84.  
  85. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
  86.  
  87. Remove the lower transmission mounting bolts.
  88.  
  89. Pull the transmission away from the engine until the transmission mainshaft clears the clutch pressure plate.
  90.  
  91. Slowly lower the transaxle assembly about 6 in. (15 cm). Check once again that all hoses and electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the transaxle, then lower it all the way.
  92.  

To install:

  1. Place the transmission on the transmission jack, and raise it to engine level.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower transmission mounting bolts and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the clutch cover and tighten the mounting bolts to33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the upper rear engine mount bracket and tighten the bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the rear engine mount, upper rear engine mount mounting bolt, and change cable bracket.
  10.  
  11. Install the front engine mount upper bracket.
  12.  
  13. Support the subframe with the subframe adapter and a suitable jack.
  14.  
  15. Install the front suspension subframe and front suspension subframe stays.

  17. Align the reference marks that you noted when you removed the transmission with the edge of both rear stiffeners, and then tighten the rear subframe mounting bolts, the front bolts, and the stiffener bolts to the specified torque.
  18.  
  19. Install the subframe mid mounts on both sides.

  21. Install the lower transmission mount mounting nuts and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).

  23. Install the lower engine rear mount mounting bolts and tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).

  25. The remainder of the installation the reverse order of removal.
  26.  
  27. Refill the transaxle to correct level.
  28.  
  29. Refill the power steering system with fluid to the correct level.
  30.  
  31. Check and adjust the wheel alignment as necessary.
  32.  

Specific to:

Honda Accord 2008

  1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio and the navigation system, and then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
  2.  
  3. Secure the hood in the wide open position with the support strut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front grille cover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the battery cables.
  8.  
  9. Remove the battery and battery tray.
  10.  
  11. Remove the air intake assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the battery base bolts, loosen the two bolts, remove the cable clamp and the harness bracket bolt, and remove the battery base.
  14.  
  15. Remove the slave cylinder mounting bolts and the bracket mounting nut, and then carefully move the slave cylinder out of the way to avoid bending the clutch line.
    WARNING
    Do not press the clutch pedal after the slave cylinder has been removed.

  16.  
  17. Remove the mounting nut and the clamp, and then move the under-hood fuse/relay box out of the way.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lock pins, the shift cable bracket bolt, and the shift cable bracket, and then disconnect the shift cables from the change lever assembly. Carefully remove both cables and the bracket together to avoid bending the cables.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector, the back-up light switch connector, and the harness clamp.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolts, the harness clamp, and the bracket.
  24.  
  25. Remove the hose from the clamp and the nuts, and remove the strut brace.
  26.  
  27. Remove the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister hose (A) and the brake booster vacuum hose.
  28.  
  29. Attach the engine hanger adapter VSB02C000015 to the threaded hole in the cylinder head.

  31. Install the engine support hanger AAR-T1256 to the vehicle, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger adapter VSB02C000015. Tighten the wing nut by hand to lift and support the engine.

  33. Remove the front engine mount stop nuts, the front engine mount stop, the vacuum hose bracket, and then remove the front engine mount bolt and disconnect the vacuum hose.
  34.  
  35. Remove the two rear engine mount bracket bolts and three rear engine mount bolts.
  36.  
  37. Remove the power steering line holder mounting bolts.
  38.  
  39. Remove the two heat shield bolts, the heat shield, the two power steering gearbox mounting bracket bolts, and the power steering gearbox mounting bracket.
  40.  
  41. Remove the power steering gearbox stiffener bolts and the power steering stiffener plates.
  42.  
  43. Remove the upper transmission mount bracket bolts.
    WARNING
    Do not remove the TORX® bolt from the upper transmission mount. If the TORX® bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.

  45. Remove the three upper transmission mount bracket bolts, the upper transmission mount bracket, the ground cable mount bolt, and the ground cable.
  46.  
  47. Remove the upper transmission mount bolts.
  48.  
  49. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  50.  
  51. Remove the front wheels.
  52.  
  53. Remove the front splash shield.
  54.  
  55. Drain the transmission fluid. Reinstall the drain plug using a new sealing washer.
  56.  
  57. Remove the damper fork.
  58.  
  59. Separate the knuckle ball joint from the lower arm.
  60.  
  61. Remove the exhaust pipe and the gaskets.
  62.  
  63. Remove the rear engine mount bracket bolts.
  64.  
  65. Remove the subframe mid mount bolts and the subframe mid mount from both sides.
  66.  
  67. Remove the lower transmission mount mounting nuts.
  68.  
  69. Remove the power steering line holder bolt and the power steering line from the clamp.
  70.  
  71. Attach front subframe adapter VSB02C000016 to the front suspension subframe and hang the belt of the subframe adapter over the front of the subframe, and then secure the belt with its stop.

  73. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the front subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, and then securely attach them with four bolts.
  74.  
  75. Remove the four front stiffener bolts, the front stiffeners, the four rear stiffeners bolts, the rear stiffeners, and the front suspension subframe.
  76.  
  77. Remove the lower transmission mount bolts and the lower transmission mount.
  78.  
  79. Pry the left halfshaft inboard joint from the differential using a prybar.
  80.  
  81. Drive the inboard joint of the right halfshaft off of the intermediate shaft using a drift and a hammer.
  82.  
  83. Remove the intermediate shaft.
  84.  
  85. Remove the clutch cover and the CKP sensor cover.
  86.  
  87. Support the transaxle with a suitable transmission jack.
  88.  
  89. Remove the lower transmission mounting bolts.
  90.  
  91. Pull the transmission away from the engine until the transmission mainshaft clears the clutch pressure plate.
  92.  
  93. Lower the transmission about 6 in. (15 cm). Check once again that all hoses and harnesses are disconnected and free from the transmission, and then lower it completely.
  94.  

To install:

  1. With the transaxle assembly on the transmission jack, and raise it to engine level.
  2.  
  3. Align the transmission mainshaft and the clutch pressure plate, and then move the transmission inward until there is no gap between the transmission housing and the engine block.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower transmission mounting bolts and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the clutch cover and the CKP sensor cover. Tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the intermediate shaft.
  10.  
  11. Install both halfshafts. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Halfshafts, Removal and Installation.-
  12.  
  13. Install the lower transmission mount with new bolts and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Remove the transmission jack.
  14.  
  15. Support the front suspension subframe with front subframe adapter VSB02C000016 and a jack.
  16.  
  17. Position the steering gearbox washers on the front suspension subframe, and lift the subframe up to the body.
  18.  
  19. Loosely install the new subframe mounting bolts, the new rear stiffener mounting bolts, the front stiffener mounting bolts, the front stiffeners, and the rear stiffeners.

  21. Partially tighten the right rear subframe mounting bolt; insert the subframe alignment pin through the positioning slot on the rear stiffener, through the positioning hole on the subframe, and into the positioning hole on the body, and then tighten the subframe mounting bolt.

  23. Partially tighten the left rear subframe mounting bolt in the same manner.

  25. Partially tighten the right and left front subframe mounting bolts.

  27. Tighten the right rear mounting bolt to the specified torque with the subframe alignment pin in the positioning hole.

  29. Tighten the left rear mounting bolt to the specified torque with the subframe alignment pin in the positioning hole.
  30.  
  31. Tighten the right and left front mounting bolt to the specified torque.
  32.  
  33. Check that the positioning holes and slots are aligned using the subframe alignment pin.
  34.  
  35. Tighten the rear and front stiffener mounting bolts to the specified torque.
  36.  
  37. Remove the jack and front subframe adapter.
  38.  
  39. Install the power steering line holder bolt and the power steering line to the clamp.
  40.  
  41. Install the lower transmission mount mounting nuts and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).

  43. Install the subframe mid mount on both sides with new bolts.

  45. Install the rear engine mount bracket bolts with new bolts and tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).

  47. Install exhaust pipe with the new gaskets, the bolts, the springs, and the new nuts.

  49. Connect the knuckle ball joint onto the lower arm.
  50.  
  51. Install the damper fork.
  52.  
  53. Refill the transaxle with fluid to the correct level.

  55. Install the front splash shield.
  56.  
  57. Install the front wheels, and set them in the straight-ahead position.
  58.  
  59. Lower the vehicle.
  60.  
  61. Install the upper transmission mount bolts and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  62.  
  63. Install the upper transmission mount bracket with new bolts, and connect the ground cable by installing its mounting bolt.

  65. Install the new upper transmission mount bracket bolts and tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).

  67. Install the steering stiffener plates, and loosely tighten the new power steering gear box mounting bolts and the stiffener plate bolts.

  69. Install the power steering gearbox mounting bracket, and tighten the bolts to the specified torque, and then install the heat shield.

  71. Tighten the driver's side of the power steering gear box mounting bolts and the stiffener plate bolts to the specified torque alternately in two steps.

  73. Install the rear power steering line holders.
  74.  
  75. Install the three new rear engine mount bolts and the two new rear engine mount bracket bolts.

  77. Install the new front engine mount bolt, the front engine mount stop, and the vacuum hose bracket with new nuts, and then connect the vacuum hose.

  79. Remove the engine support hanger and the engine hanger adapter from the engine.

  81. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.

  83. Check and adjust the wheel alignment as necessary.

  85. Start the engine and check for leaks.
