Transmission Removal & Installation


  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery cables and the battery
    Shift lever knob
    Center console
    Shift lever boot
    Shift lever
    Air cleaner housing
    Steering shaft from the steering gear box
    A/C compressor
    Exhaust manifold heat shields
    Upper starter mounting bolt
    Upper intake manifold bracket mounting bolt
    Suction valve hose
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connectors
    Splash shield
    Steering gear box electrical connector
    Torque sensor connector
    Intake manifold bracket
    Heated Oxygen (HO 2 S) sensor connectors
    Catalytic converter
    Exhaust manifold
    Shifter boot holder bolts
    Clutch slave cylinder
    Clutch release fork
    Lower transmission flange bolts

  3. Support the front subframe with a floor jack and remove the two center mounting bolts.
  5. Loosen the four outer mounting bolts 3 in. (75 mm).
  7. Lower the front subframe until it is supported by the loosened bolts.
  9. Support the transmission with the floor jack.
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear transmission mount
    Speed sensor connector and wiring harness
    Upper transmission flange bolts


To install:

Use new subframe bolts for assembly.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

    Transmission flange bolts: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
    Rear transmission mount bolts: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
    Subframe mounting bolts: 14mm bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (116 Nm) and 12mm bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm)
    Clutch slave cylinder bolts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
    A/C compressor bolts: 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
    Steering shaft pinch bolt: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
    Shift lever bolts: 86 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
