Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear tire.
  4.  
  5. Release the parking brake.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake drum.
    NOTE
    If necessary, turn the adjuster bolt with a flat-blade screwdriver until the shoes become loose.


    NOTE
    If the brake drum is stuck to the hub bearing unit, thread two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts into the brake drum to push it away from the hub bearing unit. Turn each bolt 90 degrees at a time to prevent the brake drum from binding.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  3. Make certain the brake shoes are adjusted to allow the drum clearance during installation.

CAUTION
Keep any grease off the brake drum and brake shoes.

  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the parking brake, and remove the brake drum from the hub bearing unit. If necessary, turn the adjuster bolt with a flat-tip screwdriver until the shoes become loose.
  6.  
  7. If the brake drum has clung to the hub bearing unit, thread two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts into the brake drum to push it away from the hub bearing unit. Turn each bolt 90 degrees at a time to prevent cocking the brake drum.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the brake drum in the reverse order of removal.
    1. After installation, press the brake pedal several times to make sure the brakes work and self adjust the brake shoes.
    2.  
    3. Before installing the brake drum, clean the mating surfaces of the rear hub and the inside of the brake drum.
    4.  
    5. Clean the mating surfaces of the brake drum and the inside of the wheel, then install the rear wheel.
