  1. Remove the center console panel.
  2.  
  3. Release the parking brake lever fully.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the parking brake adjusting nut.
  6.  
  7. Press the brake pedal several times to set the self-adjusting brake before adjusting the parking brake.
  8.  
  9. Pull the parking brake lever 1 click. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the parking brake adjusting nut until the parking brakes drag slightly when the rear wheels are turned.
  12.  
  13. Release the parking brake lever fully, and check that the parking brakes do not drag when the rear wheels are turned. Readjust if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Make sure the parking brakes are fully applied when the parking brake lever is pulled all the way (8 to 10 clicks).
  16.  
  17. Install the center console panel.

Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake drum. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Brake Drum, Removal and Installation.-
  4.  
  5. Remove the tension pins by pushing the respective retainer spring and turning the pin.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower return spring, and remove the brake shoe assembly over the hub.
  8.  
  9. Remove the forward brake shoe by removing the upper return spring, and disassemble the brake shoe assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rearward brake shoe by disconnecting the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
  12.  
  13. Remove the U-clip, wave washer, and pivot pin, and separate the parking brake lever from the brake shoe.

To install:

  1. Apply Molykote® 44MA to the sliding surface of the pivot pin for the rearward brake shoe.
  2.  
  3. Install the parking brake lever and the wave washer on the pivot pin, and secure with a new U-clip.
    NOTE
    Pinch the U-clip securely to prevent the parking brake lever from coming out of the brake shoe.

  4.  
  5. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
  6.  
  7. Apply a thin coat of Molykote® 44MA to the connecting rod ends, and the sliding surfaces. Wipe off any excess. Keep grease off the brake linings.
  8.  
  9. Apply a thin coat of Molykote® 44MA to the shoe ends and to the edge of the shoe surfaces that make contact with the backing plate. Wipe off any excess. Keep grease off the brake linings.
  10.  
  11. Install connecting rods A and B on the adjuster bolt.
    NOTE
    Clean the threaded portions of connecting rod A and the sliding surface of connecting rod B, and then coat them with Molykote® 44MA.


    NOTE
    Shorten connecting rod A by fully turning the adjuster bolt.

  13. Assemble the brake shoes, the upper return spring, and the connecting rods with the adjuster bolt against the backing plate, and then install the self-adjuster lever and the self-adjuster spring on the forward brake shoe.
  14.  
  15. Install the tension pins and the retainer springs by pushing in respective spring and turning each pin.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower return spring.
    NOTE
    Make sure the brake shoes positioning on the brake shoe bosses of the backing plate, and fitting the top of the brake shoes onto the wheel cylinder pistons.

  19. Install the brake drum.
    NOTE
    Before installing the brake drum, clean the mating surfaces between the rear hub and the inside of the brake drum.

  21. Clean the mating surfaces between the brake drum and the inside of the wheel, and then install the rear wheels.
  22.  
  23. Press the brake pedal several times to make sure the brakes work and to set the self-adjusting brake.
    NOTE
    Engagement of the brakes may require a greater pedal stroke immediately after the brake shoes have been replaced as a set. Several applications of the brake pedal will restore the normal pedal stroke.

  25. Adjust the parking brake.

Honda Fit 2007-2008

  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Release the parking brake, and remove the brake drum.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tension pins by pushing respective retainer spring and turning the pin.

  9. Remove the lower return spring, and remove the brake shoe assembly over the hub.

  11. Remove the forward brake shoe by removing the upper return spring, and disassemble the brake shoe assembly.

  13. Remove the rearward brake shoe by disconnecting the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.

  15. Remove the U-clip, wave washer, and pivot pin, and separate the parking brake lever from the brake shoe.

To install:

  1. Apply rubber grease to the sliding surface of the pivot pin and parking brake lever for the rearward brake shoe.
  2.  
  3. Install the parking brake lever and the wave washer on the pivot pin, and secure with a new U-clip.
    NOTE
    Pinch the U-clip securely to prevent the parking brake lever from coming out of the brake shoe.

  5. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
  6.  
  7. Apply a thin coat of rubber grease to the connecting rod ends and the sliding surfaces. Wipe off any excess. Keep grease off the brake linings.

  9. Apply a thin coat of Molykote 44 MA grease to the shoe ends and the edge of the shoe surfaces that contact the backing plate. Wipe off any excess. Keep grease off the brake linings.

  11. Install connecting rods A and B on the adjuster bolt (C).
    NOTE
    Clean the threaded portions of connecting rod A and the sliding surface of connecting rod B, then coat them with rubber grease.

  13. Shorten connecting rod A by fully turning the adjuster bolt.

  15. Assemble the brake shoes, the upper return spring (D), and with the connecting rods the adjuster bolt on the backing plate, then install the self-adjuster lever (E) and the self-adjuster spring (F) on the forward brake shoe (G).
