Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Honda S2000 2007-2008

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor connector and breather pipe. Remove the manifold absolute sensor harness from the holder. Remove the air cleaner housing cover and the air cleaner assembly. Remove the IAT sensor harness clamps and the intake air housing.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt. Remove the alternator.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the starter cable from the B terminal on the solenoid. Disconnect the BLK/WHT wire from the S terminal.
  8.  
  9. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Remove the starter from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  2.  

Specific to:

Honda Fit 2007-2008

  1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the audio system, and that the ignition switch is in LOCK (0).
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
  4.  
  5. Remove the dipstick and the dipstick tube.
  6.  
  7. Raise the vehicle on the lift, and make sure it is supported securely.
  8.  
  9. Remove the splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the starter cable from the B terminal, then disconnect the connector from the S terminal.
  12.  
  13. Remove the water hose clamp.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper mounting bolt and the lower mounting bolt, then remove the starter.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the starter, then loosely install the upper mounting bolt and the lower mounting bolt.
  2.  
  3. Fully tighten the upper mounting bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm). Tighten the lower mounting bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the water hose clamp.
  6.  
  7. Install the starter cable by aligning the tab on the terminal and the groove of the terminal holder, then install the connector.
  8.  
  9. Install the splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
  12.  
  13. Install the dipstick tube and the dipstick with new O-ring.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine to make sure the starter works properly.
  18.  
  19. Enter the anti-theft code for the audio system.
  20.  
  21. Set the clock.
  22.  

3.0L Engine

Specific to:

Honda Accord 2007

  1. Note the radio security code and the radio presets.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the battery. Remove the harness clamp.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the starter cable from the B terminal on the solenoid. Disconnect the BLK/WHT wire from the S terminal.

  9. Remove the starter retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the starter from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse order of removal.

3.5L Engines

Specific to:

Honda Accord 2008

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the battery. Remove the harness clamp.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intake air ducts and splash separator.
  6.  
  7. Remove the starter wiring harness clamp.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the starter wiring harness.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with automatic transmission, remove the upper radiator hose bracket and dipstick.
  12.  
  13. Remove the starter mounting bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the starter.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
  2.  

Hybrid

Specific to:

Honda Civic 2007-2008

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air intake assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the positive starter cable and the S terminal connector from the starter, and remove the upper radiator hose bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two bolts holding the starter and remove the starter.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the starter, and tighten the mounting bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the positive starter cable and the S terminal connector to the starter, and install the upper radiator hose bracket. Make sure the crimped side of the ring terminal faces away from the starter when you connect it.
  4.  
  5. Install the air intake assembly.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Turn the IMA battery module switch OFF.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine to make sure the starter works properly.
  12.  
  13. Turn the IMA battery module switch ON.
  14.  
  15. If the IMA battery level gauge (BAT) displays no segments, start the engine, and hold it between 3,500 rpm and 4,000 rpm without load (in N or P) until the BAT displays at least three segments.

Non-hybrid
1.8L Engine

Specific to:

Honda Civic 2007-2008

  1. Disconnect the battery cables.
  2.  
  3. Remove the exhaust pipe.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intake manifold bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wiring harness clamps and the harness connector from each clamp.
  8.  
  9. Remove the two bolts securing the starter, and then remove the starter from the engine.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the starter wiring harnesses.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Connect the positive starter cable and the connector.
    NOTE
    Make sure the starter cable crimped side of the ring terminal faces away from the starter when you connect it.

  2.  
  3. Install the starter, and then loosely install the upper mounting bolt and the lower mounting bolt.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the upper mounting bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm), and then tighten the lower mounting bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  6.  
  7. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  8.  

2.0L Engine

Specific to:

Honda Civic 2007-2008

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine splash shield.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intake manifold bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the harness clamp, and the two bolts securing the starter, and then remove the starter from the engine.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the positive starter cable and the S terminal connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the harness clamp and remove the starter.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the wiring harness clamp.
  2.  
  3. Connect the positive starter cable and S terminal connector.
    NOTE
    Make sure the starter cable crimped side of the ring terminal faces away from the starter when you connect it.

  4.  
  5. Install the starter and tighten the mounting bolts.

Testing



Specific to:

Honda Accord 2007-2008

Honda Civic 2007-2008

Honda S2000 2007-2008

  1. Disconnect the starter motor wire from the M terminal.
  2.  
  3. Make the connections for this test using the thickest (gauge) wire possible (preferably the same gauge as used on the vehicle).
    WARNING
    To avoid damaging the starter, never leave the battery connected for more than 10 seconds.

  4.  
  5. Connect the battery as shown. Make sure you disconnect the starter motor wire from the M terminal. If the starter pinion moves out, it is working properly.

  7. Disconnect the battery from the M terminal. If the pinion does not retract, the hold-in coil of the solenoid is working properly.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the battery from the starter body as shown. If the pinion retracts immediately, it is working properly.

  11. Clamp the starter firmly in a vise.
  12.  
  13. Reconnect the wire to the M terminal.
  14.  
  15. Connect the starter to the battery as shown, and confirm that the motor runs.
  16.  
  17. If the electric current meets the specification when the battery voltage is at 11 V, the starter is working properly.
