Removal & Installation

  1. Drain the engine coolant.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt by loosening the lock bolt, the mounting bolt, and the adjusting bolt, then remove the drive belt.

  5. Remove the water pump pulley and idler pulley.
  6.  
  7. Remove the five bolts securing the water pump, then remove the water pump.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Inspect and clean the O-ring groove and mating surface with the engine block.
  2.  
  3. Install the water pump, with a new O-ring, in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the pump bolts to 8.8 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Clean up any spilled engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Install the water pump pulley. Tighten the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the idler pulley. Tighten the bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the drive belt and adjust it.
  12.  
  13. Refill the radiator with engine coolant, and bleed air from the cooling system with the heater valve open.
  14.  

1.8L, 2.0L, 2.2L & 2.4L Engines



Specific to:

Honda Accord 2007-2008

Honda Civic 2007-2008

Honda S2000 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. On 2007 Civic with 2.0L engine, remove the crankshaft pulley.
  8.  
  9. On S2000, remove the water pump pulley.
  10.  
  11. On Accord and Civic with 2.0L engine, remove the drive belt automatic tensioner.
    NOTE
    It may first be necessary to remove the power steering pump from its mounting, without disconnecting the fluid hoses.

  13. Remove the water pump retaining bolts. Remove the water pump from the engine.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Clean the water pump and O-ring mating surfaces before installation.
  2.  
  3. Install the water pump to the engine using a new O-ring.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Refill the radiator. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Specific to:

Honda Accord 2008

  1. Drain the engine cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the timing belt. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Timing Belt, Removal and Installation.-
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt adjuster.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the water pump with a new O-ring. Tighten the mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  4.  
  5. Refill the engine cooling system to the correct level.

Civic Hybrid



Specific to:

Honda Civic 2007-2008

  1. Drain the engine cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine undercover and splash shield.
  4.  
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the auto tensioner.
  10.  
  11. Remove the five bolts securing the water pump, and then remove the water pump with water pump pulley.

To install:

  1. Install the water pump with a new O-ring and tighten the mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  4.  
  5. Refill the engine cooling system to the correct level.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.
