Gear Pulsers

Print

See Figures 1 and 2

The Gear Pulsers are toothed rings that rotate with the road wheels to generate the signal picked up by the wheel sensors and sent as vital data to the ALB/ABS control unit.

Inspection

Front:
  1. Check the pulser for chipped or damaged teeth and replace if necessary.
  2.
  3. Measure the air gap all the way around between the gear pulser and the wheel sensor while manually rotating the halfshaft. The air gap should be between 0.02-0.04 in. (0.4-1.0mm) for proper operation.
  4.
  5. If the air gap is greater than the specification, the knuckle is distorted and should be replaced.
  6.

Rear:
  1. Remove the rear caliper assembly and the rear brake disc.
  2.
  3. Check the gear pulser for chipped or damaged teeth and replace if necessary.
  4.
  5. Measure the air gap all the way around between the gear pulser and wheel sensor by manually rotating the hub bearing unit. If the air gap exceeds 0.02-0.4 in. (0.4-1.0mm), the knuckle is probably distorted and should be replaced.
