Driveshaft and U-Joints

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



This procedure applies only to the 4WD Wagon.

Intermediate Shaft
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid and install the drain plug.
  4.  
  5. Remove the driver's side halfshaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the three 10mm bolts.
  8.  
  9. Lower the bearing support close to the steering gearbox and remove the intermediate shaft from the differential.
  10.  

To avoid damage to the differential oil seal, hold the intermediate shaft in a horizontal position until it is clear of the differential.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the three 10mm bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). Fill the transaxle with the proper type and quantity of fluid (refer to Routine Maintenance ).

Rear Driveshafts

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2.  
  3. Mark the position of the driveshafts in relation to the flanges for reassembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the No. 1 driveshaft protector.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the No. 1 driveshaft and viscous coupling.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front center bearing support from the body.
  10.  
  11. Remove the No. 1 driveshaft by disconnecting the U-joint.
  12.  
  13. Remove the No. 3 driveshaft protector.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the No. 3 driveshaft and rear differential.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear center bearing support from the body, then remove the viscous coupling and No. 3 driveshaft.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Install the rear center bearing support on the frame and tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Temporarily connect the No. 3 driveshaft and rear differential using the 12-point bolts and yoke nuts. Tighten the bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the No. 3 driveshaft protector and tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Temporarily connect the No. 1 driveshaft and front differential using the 12-point bolts and yoke nuts. Tighten the bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the front center bearing support on the frame and tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). Temporarily connect the No. 1 driveshaft and viscous coupling using 12-point bolts. Tighten the bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the No. 1 driveshaft protector and tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
