Stereo Speakers

All Civic series models come pre-wired from the factory for four speakers. Many models are equipped with a stereo unit standard with two or four speakers already installed. The rear set of speakers, particularly on 1984-87 models are usually dealer installed and require some additional mounting components.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Front

The front speakers on all models covered, are located in the lower part of the front doors.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two screws that retain the speaker grille covers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the grille by gently prying the grille from the door panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four screws that retain the speaker and tilt the speaker forward. Disconnect the plug from the speaker. Remove the speaker from the door.
  8.  

To Install:
  1. Install the speaker in position on the door, make sure the plug is securely connected.
  2.  
  3. When installing the grilles, make sure that they click into position before tightening the screws.
  4.  

Front Tweeters

Some more fully equipped models of the 1992-95 Civic series come equipped with dedicated tweeter speakers that play only the higher frequency notes.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the door panel and disconnect the tweeter connector
  4.  
  5. Remove the two self-tapping screws, then the tweeter and cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the remaining screw to separate the tweeter from the bracket
  8.  
  9. Install by securing the tweeter to the bracket, then engaging the connector. Mount the bracket back in place and install the door panel
  10.

Rear
1988-91-EXCEPT CRX

The rear speakers in the Civic Hatchback and 1984-87 CRX models are mounted on separate panels in the rear of the hatch area, they are removed by removing the mounting screws on these panels. The speakers can then be taken off of the panel.

The rear speakers on the Civic Sedans are installed in the rear deck. They can be removed by opening the trunk and removing the mounting screws.

  1. To install on the Hatchback, screw speakers back in place and re-connect wire.
  2.  
  3. To install on Sedan, screw speakers in place with brackets properly in place if applicable.
  4.  

1984-91 CRX

The rear speakers in the CRX are mounted behind panels, in the corners, of the area behind the seats. If the rear speakers are being installed for the first time, you will have to get special rear speaker mounting brackets from the Honda dealer.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Open the access panel to the rear storage area and remove the top panel to this area as well.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two screws (on each side) that retain the speaker grille covers. These are the screws above and below the storage are latches.
  6.  
  7. The grilles can be gently pried away from the panels.
  8.  
  9. The speakers are retained by four screws in special mounting brackets. Remove the screws and lift the speakers from the brackets.
  10.  

To Install:
  1. Install the speakers in the brackets and install the grille. Make sure the grille clicks into position before installing the screws.
  2.  
  3. Reassemble the storage compartment and connect the negative battery cable.
  4.  

1992-95 SEDAN

The rear speakers on the Civic sedans are installed in the rear deck.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Open the trunk lid.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fasteners securing the speaker grilles
  6.  
  7. Remove the fasteners securing the speakers.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the 2-pin connector from the speaker and remove the speaker.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of the removal.

1992-95 COUPE

See Figure 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear shelf
  4.  
  5. Remove the three self-tapping screws, clip and speaker cover.
  6.  
  7. Unplug the connector and remove the three nuts from inside the trunk
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear speaker and adapter.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of the removal.
