Air Conditioning Thermostat Switch

The thermostat switch is mounted at the evaporator core outlet and senses the temperature of the cool air coming through the evaporator.

TESTING



See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and remove the thermostat.
  4.  
  5. Place the thermostat capillary tube in ice water.
  6.  
  7. Check that there is no continuity below 31-35°F (0.5-1.5°C).
  8.  
  9. Check that there is continuity above 36-41°F (2.5-5.0°C).
  10.  
  11. If not within specification, replace the thermostat.
  12.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and disable the SRS system (if equipped.)
  2.  


WARNING
All SRS wire harnesses are covered with a yellow insulation. Read the SRS precautions found in this section and install the short connectors as described.

  1. Properly discharge the air conditioning system into a refrigerant recovery/recycling machine.
  2.  
  3. Remove the evaporator assembly.
  4.  
  5. Separate the assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the thermostat switch.
  8.  
  9. Install the switch in position and install the evaporator assembly.
  10.  
  11. Charge the air conditioning system and check its operation.
  12.
