  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and disable the SRS system (if equipped.) On 1992-95 models, also disconnect the positive battery cable and remove the battery.

WARNING
All SRS wire harnesses are covered with a yellow insulation. Read the SRS precautions found in this section and install the short connectors as described.

  1. Properly discharge the air conditioning system into a refrigerant recovery/recycling machine.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and plug the refrigerant receiver and suction lines at the evaporator.
  4.  
  5. Remove the glove box and support brackets.
  6.  
  7. Loosen and remove the evaporator securing bands.
  8.  

Some earlier models do not use bands to secure the evaporator case, only 2 bolts were used.

  1. Disconnect the air conditioner thermo-switch wire connector.
  2.  
  3. Remove the evaporator securing bolts and nuts.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the drain hose and remove the evaporator assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the evaporator case attaching clips and screws.
  8.  
  9. Separate the case halves and remove the evaporator.
  10.  
  11. Separate the expansion valve from the evaporator.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Connect the expansion valve to the evaporator assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the evaporator assembly into the case halves.
  4.  
  5. Secure the evaporator case assembly together.
  6.  
  7. Install the evaporator assembly and connect drain hose.
  8.  
  9. Connect the thermo-switch wire connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the evaporator housing securing bands.
  12.  
  13. Install the glove box assembly.
  14.  
  15. Reconnect the refrigerant lines at the evaporator. Tighten the suction hose to the evaporator for 1984-91 models to 23 ft. lbs. (32 Nm) and for 1992-95 models to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Tighten the receiver pipe for 1984-91 models to 12 ft. lbs. (17 Nm) and for 1992-95 models to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Charge, evacuate and leak test the air conditioning system.
