Pressure Switch

Print

This is a dual pressure switch which turns the magnetic clutch on or off as a result of irregularly high or low pressures. The pressure switch is located at the receiver/drier or condenser.

TESTING

  1. Disconnect the pressure switch wire connector from the receiver/drier or from the high pressure line.
  2.
  3. Start the vehicle and turn the air conditioner ON.
  4.
  5. Hook up a set of manifold gauges.
  6.
  7. Check for 12 volts at the pressure switch wire connector.
  8.
  9. If there is no voltage at either terminal of wire connector, check the air conditioner relay.
  10.
  11. Connect a jumper wire between the two terminals.
  12.
  13. Check that the compressor clutch engages.
  14.
  15. If the compressor magnetic clutch fails to operate check the magnetic clutch and the wiring.
  16.
  17. Check for continuity through the switch using an ohmmeter.
  18.
  19. At system normal operating pressures and the high side pressure between 33-340 psi (228-2345kpa), there should be continuity through the switch.
  20.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Properly discharge the air conditioning system into a refrigerant recovery/recycling machine.
  4.
  5. If required, remove radiator grille.
  6.
  7. Using two wrenches, remove the pressure switch.
  8.
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure.
