Power Door Locks

Print

The power door locking system consists of switches, actuators and relays. Control switch(es) are used to operate the system. Actuators are used to raise and lower the door lock buttons. These actuators are mounted inside the door assembly and are electrically operated once the switch is depressed. A control unit or functional relay is used to allow the system to regulate current, to function and to align all the actuators and switches with one another.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Door Lock Switch
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the door panel retaining screws.
  4.
  5. Lift the door panel up and disconnect all the electrical connections required to separate the door panel from the door.
  6.
  7. Remove the door panel from the vehicle. Remove the switch assembly from its mounting.
  8.
  9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  10.

COMPONENT TESTING

Door Lock Switch
  1. Remove the inside handle trim plate with the switch.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the 3-pin connector.
  4.
  5. With the lock switch in the LOCK position, check for continuity between terminals 2 and 3.
  6.
  7. With the lock switch in the UNLOCK position, check for continuity between terminals 1 and 2.
  8.

See Figure 3

The driver's door has more controls and therefore more connectors.

  1. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the 4-pin connector.
  4.
  5. Test whether the LOCK position operates by connecting positive battery voltage to terminal 2 and the negative to terminal 1 momentarily.
  6.
  7. Test whether the UNLOCK position operates by connecting positive battery voltage to terminal 1 and the negative to terminal 2 momentarily.
  8.

To prevent damage to the motor, apply battery voltage momentarily.

  1. If the actuator fails to operate properly, replace it.
  2.
  3. With the lock switch in the LOCK position, check that there is continuity between terminals 3 and 4.
  4.
  5. With the lock switch in the UNLOCK position, check that there is no continuity between terminals 3 and 4.
  6.

See Figure 4

  1. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the 4-pin connector.
  4.
  5. Test whether the LOCK position operates by connecting positive battery voltage to terminal 4 and the negative to terminal 3 momentarily.
  6.
  7. Test whether the UNLOCK position operates by connecting positive battery voltage to terminal 3 and the negative to terminal 4 momentarily.
  8.

To prevent damage to the motor, apply battery voltage momentarily.

  1. If the actuator fails to operate properly, replace it.
  2.
  3. With the lock switch in the LOCK position, check that there is continuity between terminals 1 and 2.
  4.
  5. With the lock switch in the UNLOCK position, check that there is no continuity between terminals 1 and 2.

EXCEPT LEFT FRONT DOOR

See Figure 5

  1. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the 2-pin connector.
  4.
  5. Test whether the LOCK position operates by applying battery voltage across terminal 1 and grounding terminal 2 momentarily.
  6.
  7. Test whether the UNLOCK position operates by reversing the polarity across terminals momentarily.
  8.

To prevent damage to the motor, apply battery voltage momentarily.

  1. If the actuator fails to operate properly, replace it.
