SHIFT LINKAGE



Except 4WD Civic Wagon

The Honda shift linkage on these models is non-adjustable. However, if the linkage is binding, or if there is excessive play, check the linkage bushings and pivot points. Lubricate with light oil, or replace worn bushings as necessary.

4WD Civic Wagon

See Figure 3

SELECTOR CABLE
  1. Remove the console.
  2.  
  3. With the transaxle in neutral, check that the groove in the lever bracket is aligned with the index mark on the selector cable.
  4.  
  5. If the index mark is not aligned with the groove in the cable, loosen the locknuts and turn the adjuster as necessary.
  6.  

After adjustment, check the operation of the gearshift lever. Also check that the threads of the cables do not extend out of the cable adjuster by more than 0.39 in. (10mm.)

GEARSHIFT CABLE

See Figure 4

  1. Remove the console.
  2.  
  3. Place the transaxle in 4th gear.
  4.  
  5. Measure the clearance between the gearshift lever bracket and the stopper while pushing the lever forward. It should be between 0.02-0.26 in. (0.5-6.5mm).
  6.  
  7. If the clearance is outside of the specification, loosen the locknuts and turn the adjuster in or out until the correct clearance is obtained.
  8.  

After adjustment, check the operation of the gearshift lever. Also check that the threads of the cables do not extend out of the cable adjuster by more than 0.39 in. (10mm.)
