The transaxle can be identified by a number located on the clutch housing. The 1984-87 models use a 4 or five-speed manual transaxle. The four-speed transaxle is identified as the GV type and the five-speed as the GW type. The 1985-87 4WD Wagons use a modified GW five-speed and the 1988-91 4WD Wagons use a modified L3 manual transaxle. Both of these 4WD models also employ a Super Low (SL) gear, making it essentially a six-speed. The 1988-91 models use a 4 or five-speed manual transaxle which is identified as the L3 type. The 1992-95 models use a five-speed transaxle identified as the S20 type.
