Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Lift and properly support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Apply parking brake and block rear wheels so the vehicle will not roll off stands.
  4.  


WARNING
Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal from the battery, then remove the positive (+) terminal.
  2.  
  3. Remove air cleaner housing assembly.
  4.  
  5. Detach the starter cables from the starter motor.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the solenoid harness connector
  8.  
  9. Detach the drive pulley speed sensor connector
  10.  
  11. Disconnect ground cable terminals.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clip, then separate the shift cable from the control lever.
  14.  


WARNING
Take care not to bend the shift cable.

  1. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector.
  2.  
  3. Detach the driven pulley speed sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the secondary gear shaft speed sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Unscrew the transmission housing mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the drain plug, and drain the CVT fluid.
  10.  
  11. Reinstall the drain plug always using a new sealing washer.
  12.  


WARNING
While installing the drain plug, do not to allow foreign particles to enter into the transmission.

  1. Detach the splash shield.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cotter pins and castle nuts.
  4.  
  5. Separate the ball joints from the lower arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right damper fork bolt.
  8.  
  9. Separate right damper fork and damper.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right and left driveshafts out of the transaxle.
  12.  
  13. Place plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
  14.  

Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil.

  1. Remove the exhaust pipe.
  2.  
  3. Detach the right front mount/bracket.
  4.  
  5. Loosen and remove the ATF cooler hoses at the ATF cooler lines.
  6.  

Plug the ATF cooler hoses and lines.

  1. Remove the engine stiffeners.
  2.  
  3. Detach the flywheel cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the eight drive plate bolts one at time while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
  6.  
  7. Remove the distributor.
  8.  
  9. Attach a hoisting bracket to the engine.
  10.  
  11. Raise the engine slightly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear engine mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Place a jack under the transmission.
  18.  
  19. Raise the transmission enough to take weight off of the mounts, then carefully remove the transmission mount bracket.
  20.  
  21. Pull the transmission away from the engine until it clears the dowel pins.
  22.  
  23. Remove the transmission.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Flush the ATF cooler.
  2.  
  3. Install the torque converter assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the starter motor on the torque converter housing.
  6.  
  7. Attach the two 14mm dowel pins in the torque converter housing.
  8.  
  9. Place the transaxle on a jack.
  10.  
  11. Raise the transaxle to the engine assembly level.
  12.  
  13. Attach the transaxle to the engine.
  14.  
  15. Install two transaxle housing mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Attach the engine mounting bolts.
  18.  
  19. Install the transaxle mount bracket.
  20.  
  21. Install the remaining transaxle housing mounting bolts.
  22.  
  23. Attach the remaining rear engine mounting bolt.
  24.  
  25. Remove the transaxle jack.
  26.  
  27. Attach the torque converter to the drive plate. There are eight drive plate bolts. Torque as follows:
    1. Rotate the crankshaft pulley as necessary to tighten the bolts to 1 / 2 of the specified torque.
    2.  
    3. Then torque all in a crisscross pattern to final torque.
    4.  
    5. After tightening the last bolt, check that the crankshaft rotates freely.
    6.

  29. Torque the fasteners as follows:

    10 x 1.25 mm bolts: 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Engine Stiffener with 8 x 1.25 mm bolts: 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm)

  31. Install the torque converter cover.
  32.  
  33. Attach and the engine stiffener.
  34.  
  35. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  36.  
  37. Connect the ATF cooler hoses to the ATF cooler lines.
  38.  
  39. Install the right front mount/bracket.
  40.  
  41. Install the control lever with a new lock washer to the control shaft.
  42.  
  43. Attach the shift cable cover.
  44.  


WARNING
Take care not to bend the shift cable.

  1. Install the exhaust pipe A.
  2.  
  3. Install a new set ring on the end of each driveshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the right and left driveshafts.
  6.  


WARNING
While installing the driveshafts in the differential, be sure not to allow dust and other foreign particles to enter into the transaxle.

Clean the areas where the driveshafts contact the transaxle thoroughly with carburetor cleaner, and allow to dry.

  1. Turn the right and left steering knuckle fully outward.
  2.  
  3. Slide each driveshaft into the differential until you feel its set ring clip engage the side gear.
  4.  
  5. Install the damper fork.
  6.  
  7. Attach the right and left ball joints to the each lower arm.
  8.  
  9. Install the castle nuts and new cotter pins.
  10.  
  11. Install the splash shield.
  12.  
  13. Connect the mainshaft speed sensor and the shift control solenoid connectors.
  14.  
  15. Install the countershaft speed sensor and the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connectors.
  16.  
  17. Connect the lock-up control solenoid connector.
  18.  
  19. Install the transaxle ground cable.
  20.  
  21. Connect the starter cables on the starter motor.
  22.  
  23. Install the cable holder.
  24.  
  25. Connect the intake air duct.
  26.  
  27. Install the intake air duct and the resonator.
  28.  
  29. Connect the intake air duct and the air cleaner housing assembly.
  30.  
  31. Refill the transaxle with Honda CVT fluid.
  32.  
  33. Connect the positive (+) cable first, then the negative (-) cable to the battery.
  34.  
  35. Check the ignition timing.
  36.  
  37. Start the engine.
  38.  
  39. Set the parking brake, and shift the transaxle through all gears, at least three times.
  40.  
  41. Check the shift cable adjustment.
  42.  
  43. Have the wheel alignment checked.
  44.  
  45. Let the engine reach operating temperature.
  46.  
  47. Turn it off and check the fluid level.
  48.  
  49. Road test the vehicle.
