Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and note the radio security code.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the fasteners securing the distributor cap to the distributor housing, remove the cap with the wires attached and place safely aside and remove the distributor cap seal from the distributor body.
  4.  
  5. Locate the fastener that secures the ignition rotor to the distributor shaft, and note the position of the rotor for reinstallation, remove the fastener, the rotor and then, if equipped, the protective cover.
  6.  
  7. Locate the ignition coil that is secured by two fasteners onto the metal mounting posts. Remove the black/yellow wire from the terminal marked A (+) and white/blue wire from the terminal marked B (-).
  8.  
  9. Remove the two fasteners that secure the ignition coil to the distributor housing and remove the ignition coil.

To install:

  1. Install the components in the reverse order of removal.
  2.  
  3. Connect the battery negative cable and enter the radio security code.
    NOTE
    The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) idle memory must be reset after reconnecting the battery. Start the engine and hold it at 3000 rpm until the cooling fan comes on. Then allow the engine to idle for about five minutes with all accessories OFF and with the transaxle in Park or Neutral.

Testing



2.0L Engine
  1. Note the radio security code, then disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the fasteners securing the distributor cap to the distributor housing, remove the cap with the wires attached and place safely aside and remove the distributor cap seal from the distributor body.
  4.  
  5. On models equipped with a protective cover under the distributor cap, locate the fastener that secures the ignition rotor to the distributor shaft. Note the position of the rotor for reinstallation, remove the fastener, the rotor and then the protective cover.
  6.  
  7. Locate the ignition coil that is secured by two fasteners onto the metal mounting posts. Remove the black/yellow wire from the terminal marked A (+) and white/blue wire from the terminal marked B (-).
    NOTE
    Resistance will vary with coil temperature. All specifications are measured at a temperature of 68°F (20°C)

  9. Measure the primary resistance between the A (+) and B (-) terminals using an ohmmeter, then compare with the following specifications:

    0.63-0.77 ohms

  11. Measure the secondary resistance between the A (+) and the high-voltage output secondary winding terminal using an ohmmeter. Then, compare with the following specifications:
    NOTE

    12,800-19,200 ohms

  13. Reconnect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
