Ignition Module

The Ignition Control Module (ICM) is located in the distributor housing near the ignition coil. To access the module, remove the distributor cap, rotor, and if equipped, the dust cover.

Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Note the radio security code, if equipped, then disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the fasteners securing the distributor cap to the distributor housing, remove the cap with the wires attached and place safely aside and remove the distributor cap seal from the distributor body.
  4.  
  5. Locate the fastener that secures the ignition rotor to the distributor shaft. Note the position of the rotor for reinstallation, remove the fastener, the rotor and, if equipped, the protective cover.
  6.  
  7. Locate the Ignition Control Module (ICM) which is near the ignition coil and mounted onto the distributor housing plate. Remove the following wires:

    CR-V: Remove the yellow/green, black/yellow, white/blue wires, and if equipped the blue wire from the ICM

  9. Remove the fasteners that secure the ICM to the distributor body, then remove the ICM.
  10.  
  11. Install the components in the reverse order of removal.
  12.  
  13. Connect the battery negative cable and enter the radio security code.
    NOTE
    The Powertrain Control Module(PCM) idle memory must be reset after reconnecting the battery. Start the engine and hold it at 3000 rpm until the cooling fan comes on. Then allow the engine to idle for about five minutes with all accessories OFF and with the transaxle in Park or Neutral.

Testing



2.0L Engine

Make sure to note the location where the wires are connected. Use a piece of paper and note the wire locations and connections, or carefully mark the wires before removing them. Failure to reinstall the wires correctly could cause expensive component failure.

  1. Loosen the fasteners securing the distributor cap to the distributor housing, remove the cap with the wires attached and place safely aside and remove the distributor cap seal from the distributor body.
  2.  
  3. Locate the fastener that secures the ignition rotor to the distributor shaft and note the position of the rotor for reinstallation, remove the fastener, the rotor and then, if equipped, the protective cover.
  4.  
  5. Locate the Ignition Control Module (ICM) which is near the ignition coil and mounted onto the distributor housing plate. To test proceed as follows:

  7. Remove the yellow/green, black/yellow, white/blue wires, and the blue wires from the ICM
  8.  
  9. With the ignition switch ON, check for battery voltage between the black/yellow and ground. If voltage is present, proceed with testing. If no voltage is present check for an open circuit between the wire and the ignition switch.
  10.  
  11. With the ignition switch ON, check for battery voltage between the white/blue and ground. If voltage is present, go to the next step. If no voltage is present, check the ignition coil and the white/blue between the ICM and the coil.
  12.  
  13. Detach the electrical multi-connector at the Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module ECM/PCM and check for continuity on the yellow/green wire between the multi-connector and the yellow/green wire at the ICM. There should be continuity. If there is no continuity, check for an open circuit in the yellow/green wire circuit. Check for continuity between the yellow/green wire and ground. There should be no continuity. If there is continuity to ground, locate where the yellow/green wire is shorted to ground, and repair. Reconnect the ECM/PCM multi-connector.

  15. If all the test conditions are passed, replace the ICM.
