Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine

NOTE
The engine and transaxle are removed from the vehicle as a unit.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Relieve fuel system pressure.

  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fuse/Relay box battery cables
     
    Battery and tray
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors and grommet. Pull the PCM harness through the firewall.
     
    Left engine wire harness connectors
     
    Cruise control actuator
     
    Power steering pump belt and pump
     
    A/C compressor drive belt
     
    Fuel lines
     
    Brake booster vacuum line
     
    Accelerator cable
     
    Power Steering Pressure (PSP) switch
     
    Splash shield
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO 2 S) connector
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    Right damper fork
     
    Lower ball joints

  13. Separate the inner CV-joints from the transaxle and support the axle halfshafts out of the work area with safety wire.
  14.  
  15. If equipped with a manual transaxle, remove or disconnect the following:

    Clutch slave cylinder
     
    Clutch hose bracket
     
    Transaxle ground cable
     
    Shift cables
     

  16.  
  17. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, remove or disconnect the following:

    Shift cable cover
     
    Shift cable
     
    Transaxle ground cable and hose clamp
     
    Transaxle fluid cooler lines
     

  18.  
  19. For all vehicles, remove or disconnect the following:

    A/C hose clamp
     
    Radiator
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Rear driveshaft, if equipped
     

  20.  
  21. Attach a hoist to the engine lifting eyes and support the powertrain weight.
  22.  
  23. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Left front mount and bracket
     
    Right front mount and bracket
     
    Rear mount bracket through bolt
     
    Upper bracket
     
    Transaxle mount and bracket
     

  24.  
  25. Lift the powertrain away from the vehicle.

To install:


NOTE
Use new self-locking nuts and color-coded self-locking bolts when installing the engine mounts and suspension components.


NOTE
Do not tighten the engine or transaxle mount fasteners until instructed to do so.

  1. Lower the powertrain into position.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle mount and bracket. Tighten the frame mounting bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Upper bracket. Tighten the nuts in sequence to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
     
    Rear mount bracket through bolt
     
    Right front mount and bracket
     
    Left front mount and bracket
     

  4.  
  5. Tighten the remaining mount fasteners as follows:
    1. Transaxle mount fasteners to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) and the through bolt to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Rear mount bracket through bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Right front mount 12mm bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) and the 10mm bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Left front mount 12mm stud bolt to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm), 10mm bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm), and 12mm nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Right front mount 12mm nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).

  7. Install or connect the following:

    Rear driveshaft, if equipped
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Radiator
     
    A/C hose clamp

  9. If equipped with a manual transaxle, install or connect the following:

    Shift cables
     
    Transaxle ground cable
     
    Clutch hose bracket
     
    Clutch slave cylinder
     

  10.  
  11. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, install or connect the following:

    Transaxle fluid cooler lines
     
    Transaxle ground cable and hose clamp
     
    Shift cable
     
    Shift cable cover
     

  12.  
  13. For all vehicles, install or connect the following:

    Axle halfshafts
     
    Lower ball joints
     
    Right damper fork
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    HO 2 S connector
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Splash shield
     
    PSP switch
     
    Accelerator cable
     
    Brake booster vacuum line
     
    Fuel lines
     
    A/C compressor drive belt
     
    Power steering pump and belt
     
    Cruise control actuator
     
    Left engine wire harness connectors
     
    PCM connectors and grommet
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Battery and tray
     
    Fuse/Relay box battery cables
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  14.  
  15. Fill the engine crankcase to the correct level.
  16.  
  17. Fill the transaxle to the correct level.
  18.  
  19. Fill the cooling system.
  20.  
  21. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  22.  
  23. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.

2.4L Engine

NOTE
The engine and transaxle are removed from the vehicle as a unit.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Relieve fuel system pressure.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fuse/Relay box battery cables
     
    Battery and tray
     
    Intake manifold cover
     
    IAT sensor connector
     
    Breather hose
     
    Intake duct
     
    Cables from the power distribution center
     
    Throttle and cruise cables
     
    Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors and grommet. Pull the PCM harness through the firewall.
     
    Fuel lines
     
    EVAP canister
     
    Brake booster vacuum line
     
    Clutch slave cylinder
     
    Clutch hose bracket
     
    Shift cables
     
    Drive belt
     
    Power steering pump, leaving the hoses connected

  13. Attach a hoist to the engine lifting eyes and support the powertrain weight.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Splash shield
     
    Wheels
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Rear driveshaft
     
    Stabilizer links
     
    Right damper fork
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Shift cable
     
    Radiator
     
    Upper bracket
     
    Transaxle mount and bracket
     
    Front mount bolt
     
    Rear mount bracket bolts. Matchmark the sub-frame mounting bolt centers.

There is a special tool necessary for sub-frame removal. The Honda tool number is EQS02C000011. Attach the tool as explained in the tool instructions, attach a floor jack with adapter, remove the 4 sub-frame bolts and lower the sub-frame.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    A/C compressor without disconnecting the hoses
     

  2.  
  3. Check that all hoses and wires are disconnected.
  4.  
  5. Lower the engine about 6 inches and recheck all clearances.
  6.  
  7. Lower the engine all the way.
  8.  
  9. Remove the chain hoist.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:
    NOTE
    Use new self-locking nuts and color-coded self-locking bolts when installing the engine mounts and suspension components.


    NOTE
    Do not tighten the engine or transaxle mount fasteners until instructed to do so.



    Front engine mount bracket bolts: 33 ft. lbs. (44Nm)
     
    A/C compressor bracket: 33 ft. lbs. (44Nm)
     
    Stiffener 10mm bolts: 33 ft. lbs. (44Nm); 6mm bolts 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    A/C compressor bolts: 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Subframe front bolt: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Subframe rear bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm)
     
    Upper bracket bolt and nut: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Transmission mount bracket support bolts/nuts: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    PS pump bolts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Intake manifold cover: 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm)

  3. Lower the powertrain into position.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle mount and bracket. Tighten the frame mounting bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Upper bracket. Tighten the nuts in sequence to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
     
    Rear mount bracket through bolt
     
    Right front mount and bracket
     
    Left front mount and bracket
     

  6.  
  7. Tighten the remaining mount fasteners as follows:
    1. Transaxle mount fasteners to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) and the through bolt to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Rear mount bracket through bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Right front mount 12mm bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) and the 10mm bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Left front mount 12mm stud bolt to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm), 10mm bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm), and 12mm nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Right front mount 12mm nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    10.

  9. Install or connect the following:

    Rear driveshaft, if equipped
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Radiator
     
    A/C hose clamp
     

  10.  
  11. If equipped with a manual transaxle, install or connect the following:

    Shift cables
     
    Transaxle ground cable
     
    Clutch hose bracket
     
    Clutch slave cylinder
     

  12.  
  13. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, install or connect the following:

    Transaxle fluid cooler lines
     
    Transaxle ground cable and hose clamp
     
    Shift cable
     
    Shift cable cover
     

  14.  
  15. For all vehicles, install or connect the following:

    Axle halfshafts
     
    Lower ball joints
     
    Right damper fork
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    HO 2 S connector
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Splash shield
     
    PSP switch
     
    Accelerator cable
     
    Brake booster vacuum line
     
    Fuel lines
     
    A/C compressor drive belt
     
    Power steering pump and belt
     
    Cruise control actuator
     
    Left engine wire harness connectors
     
    PCM connectors and grommet
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Battery and tray
     
    Fuse/Relay box battery cables
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  16.  
  17. Fill the engine crankcase to the correct level.
  18.  
  19. Fill the transaxle to the correct level.
  20.  
  21. Fill the cooling system.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  24.  
  25. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
