Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Distributor
     
    Valve cover
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing belt.
     

  4.  
  5. Loosen the valve adjuster locknuts and screws so that all valves are closed.
    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Rear timing belt cover
     
    Camshafts
     
    Rocker arms
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arms in their original positions
     
    Camshafts
     
    Rear timing belt cover
     
    Camshaft sprockets. Tighten the bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
     
    Timing belt

  3. Adjust the valve clearance.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front cover
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Valve cover
     
    Distributor
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Remove the camshaft chain
  2.  
  3. Loosen the rocker adjusting screws

  5. Remove the camshaft holder bolts 2 turns at a time in the sequence shown.

  7. Remove the camshaft chain guide, camshaft holders and camshafts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rocker arm assembly.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Prior to installation, clean the No.5 rocker shaft holder mating surface and apply RTV gasket sealer to the mounting point on the head. See the illustration for the torque sequence. Torque the 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and the 6mm bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
