Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Align the timing marks at TDC No.1.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front splash shield
     
    Drive belt
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    CKP sensor
     
    VTC oil control connector
     
    VTC oil control solenoid valve

  9. Support the engine with a block of wood and jack.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Ground cable
     
    Upper support bracket
     
    Side engine mount
     
    Chain case

  13. Loosely install the crank pulley. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise to compress the auto-tensioner. Align the holes on the lock and auto-tensioner and insert a 1.5mm pin into the holes. Turn the crank clockwise to hold the pin.

  15. Remove the auto-tensioner.
  16.  
  17. Remove the chain guides.
  18.  
  19. Remove the tensioner arm.
  20.  
  21. Remove the chain.
  22.  
  23. With the case removed, drive out the old seal and install a new one.
  24.

  1. Set the crankshaft to TDC.
  2.  
  3. Set the camshafts to TDC.
  4.  
  5. Install the chain on the sprocket with the colored piece A aligned with the punch mark B.

  7. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. See the accompanying illustration for sealer application. Observe the following torques:

    Chain guide: 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Tensioner arm: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Auto-tensioner: 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Upper chain guide: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Case: 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Side mount: 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Upper bracket: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
