Adjustment

2.0L Engine

Adjust the valves only when the cylinder head temperature is less than 100°F (38°C).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

  4.
  5. Rotate the crankshaft so that the valves to be adjusted are closed and the rocker arm is contacting the camshaft lobe base circle.
  6.
  7. Measure the valve clearance. If adjustment is necessary, loosen the locknut and turn the adjusting screw as necessary to achieve the correct valve clearance.
  8.
  9. The correct valve clearance is:

    Intake valves: 0.003-0.005 inches (0.08-0.12mm)

    Exhaust valves: 0.006-0.008 inches (0.16-0.20mm)

  10.
  11. After adjustment, tighten the locknuts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  12.
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Valve cover

    Air intake tube

    Negative battery cable

  14.
  15. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
  16.

2.4L Engine

Adjust the valves only when the cylinder head temperature is less than 100°F (38°C).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

    cylinder head cover

  4.
  5. Set the timing marks as shown in the illustration with N0.1 at TDC. Check all clearances. Intake should be 0.008-0.010 in.; exhaust should be 0.011-0.013 in. Intake locknut torque is 14 ft. lbs.; exhaust is 10 ft. lbs.
  6.
  7. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees clockwise and recheck No.3.
  8.
  9. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees clockwise and recheck No.4.
  10.
  11. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees clockwise and recheck No.2.
