Adjustment



The wheel bearings are sealed units and are not adjustable.

Removal & Installation



2001 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Spindle nut
     
    Brake hose bracket
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
     
    Outer tie rod end
     
    Upper and lower ball joints
     
    Steering knuckle
     

  4.  
  5. Press the hub out of the wheel bearing.
  6.  
  7. Remove the splash guard.
  8.  
  9. Remove the snapring and press the wheel bearing out of the steering knuckle.
  10.  
  11. If necessary, press the inner bearing race off of the hub.

To install:


NOTE
Use new ball joint nuts, split pins, snapring and a new spindle nut for assembly.

  1. Press the bearing into the steering knuckle and install the snapring.
  2.  
  3. Install the splash guard.
  4.  
  5. Press the hub into the bearing.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Steering knuckle. Tighten the upper ball joint nut to 29-35 ft. lbs. (39-47 Nm) and the lower ball joint nut to 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-59 Nm).
     
    Outer tie rod end. Tighten the nut to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
     
    Brake caliper and rotor. Tighten the caliper bracket bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
     
    Brake hose bracket
     
    Spindle nut. Tighten the nut to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm).
     
    Front wheel

  9. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  10.  

2002-06 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Spindle nut
     
    Brake caliper and rotor. Forcing screws are needed to remove the rotor.
     
    Brake hose bracket
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Stabilizer link
     
    Lower arm from the knuckle
     
    Strut-to-knuckle bolts
     
    Steering hub/knuckle assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Press the hub from the knuckle. The bearings and races can now be pressed out and replaced.
    NOTE
    With ABS, install the bearing with the magnetic encoder (brown color) toward the inside of the knuckle.

  6.  
  7. Observe the following torques:

    Strut bolts: 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm)
     
    Ball stud nuts: 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar link: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Spindle nut: 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm)
