Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. In the engine compartment, open the heater valve cable clamp and disconnect the cable from the heater valve arm. Then, turn the heater valve to the fully opened position.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  8.  
  9. Remove the heater housing-to-chassis nut.
    NOTE
    When removing the heater housing nut, be careful not to damage or bend the fuel lines, the brake lines, etc.

  10.  
  11. Remove the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Remove the driver-s side lower instrument panel cover screws, disengage the clips and remove the lower cover.
    2.  
    3. Remove the knee bolster bolts and the knee bolster.
    4.  
    5. Remove the glove box stops from each side of the glove box.
    6.  
    7. Remove the glove box-to-instrument panel bolts and the glove box.
    8.  
    9. Remove the lower console cover by disengaging the 4 clips and removing the cover.
    10.  
    11. Remove the 6 center pocket-to-instrument panel screws; then, insert a flat tipped screwdriver at the upper right side corner of the center pocket, push down on the top of the hook and remove the center pocket/beverage holder assembly.
    12.  
    13. Remove the center instrument panel lower cover screws and disengage the clips on the upper left side; then, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the cover.
    14.  
    15. Gently, push the power window switch from the instrument panel-s lower cover opening by hand. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the power window switch.
    16.  
    17. Close the driver-s side air vent; then, gently, push out the clips and pull out the vent. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the vent.
    18.  
    19. Gently, push out the driver-s side defogger trim; then, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the side defogger trim.
    20.  
    21. At the base of the steering wheel, remove the access panel and disconnect the air bag electrical connector.
    22.  
    23. Remove the steering column covers screws and the covers.
    24.  
    25. Remove the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts/bolts and lower the steering column.
    26.  
    27. Remove the instrument panel side covers.
    28.  
    29. Disconnect the wiring harness connector and remove the nuts.
    30.  
    31. Move the under-dash fuse/relay box.
    32.  
    33. Disconnect the antenna connector and the harness clips.
    34.  
    35. Remove the connector holder from the instrument panel frame.
    36.  
    37. Remove the control unit/relay bracket from behind the center of the instrument panel.
    38.  
    39. Remove the passenger-s side lower instrument panel cover.
    40.  
    41. Disconnect the connectors and the harness clips.
    42.  
    43. Remove the instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
    44.  
    45. Using an assistant, remove the instrument panel.
    46.

  13. Remove the evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
    1. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
    2.  
    3. In the engine compartment, remove the refrigerant lines-to-evaporator housing bolts.
    4.  
    5. Separate the lines, discard the grommets and plug the openings to prevent contamination.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the evaporator housing-s temperature sensor connector.
    8.  
    9. Remove the evaporator housing-to-chassis screws/nut and remove the evaporator housing.
    10.

  15. Disconnect the mode control motor and the air mix control motor electrical connectors and remove the wiring harness clips and the wiring harness from the heater housing.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater duct clip, the heater housing-to-chassis nuts and the heater housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the heater core cover screws and the cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the heater core pipe clamp screws and the clamp.
  22.  
  23. Remove the heater core from the heater housing.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core in the heater housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the heater core pipe clamp and the clamp screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the heater core cover and the cover screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the heater housing, the heater housing-to-chassis nuts and the heater duct clip.
  8.  
  9. Install the wiring harness clips and the wiring harness to the heater housing and connect the mode control motor and the air mix control motor electrical connectors.
  10.  
  11. Install the evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
    1. Install the evaporator housing and the evaporator housing-to-chassis screws/nut.
    2.  
    3. Connect the evaporator housing-s temperature sensor connector.
    4.  
    5. Using new grommets, connect the refrigerant lines.
    6.  
    7. In the engine compartment, install the refrigerant lines-to-evaporator housing bolts.
    8.

  13. Install the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Using an assistant, install the instrument panel.
    2.  
    3. Install the instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
    4.  
    5. Connect the connectors and the harness clips.
    6.  
    7. Install the passenger-s side lower instrument panel cover.
    8.  
    9. Install the control unit/relay bracket to the center of the instrument panel.
    10.  
    11. Install the connector holder to the instrument panel frame.
    12.  
    13. Connect the antenna connector and the harness clips.
    14.  
    15. Install the under-dash fuse/relay box.
    16.  
    17. Connect the wiring harness connector and install the nuts.
    18.  
    19. Install the instrument panel side covers.
    20.  
    21. Install the steering column and the column-to-instrument panel nuts/bolts. Torque the nuts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) and the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    22.  
    23. Install the steering column covers and the cover screws.
    24.  
    25. At the base of the steering wheel, connect the air bag electrical connector and install the access panel.
    26.  
    27. Connect the electrical connector and install the driver-s side defogger trim.
    28.  
    29. Connect the electrical connectors and install driver-s side air vent.
    30.  
    31. Connect the electrical connectors and install the power window switch to the instrument panel-s lower cover opening.
    32.  
    33. Install the center instrument panel lower cover and engage the clips on the upper left side; then, connect the electrical connectors and Install the cover screws.
    34.  
    35. Install the center pocket/beverage holder assembly and the 6 center pocket-to-instrument panel screws.
    36.  
    37. Install the lower console cover by engaging the 4 clips.
    38.  
    39. Install the glove box and the glove box-to-instrument panel bolts.
    40.  
    41. Install the glove box stops to each side of the glove box.
    42.  
    43. Install the knee bolster and the knee bolster bolts.
    44.  
    45. Install the driver-s side lower instrument panel cover, engage the clips and install the lower cover screws.
      NOTE
      When installing the heater housing nut, be careful not to damage or bend the fuel lines, the brake lines or etc.

  15. Install the heater housing-to-chassis nut.
  16.  
  17. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.
  18.  
  19. In the engine compartment, connect the cable to the heater valve arm and close the heater valve cable clamp.
  20.  
  21. Refill the cooling system.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  
  25. Evacuate and charge and leak test the air conditioning system refrigerant.
  26.  
  27. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
