Transaxle Removal & Installation

2001 Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Clutch slave cylinder and hose bracket
     
    Starter motor
     
    Transaxle ground cable
     
    Reverse lamp switch connector
     
    Wire harness bracket
     
    Shift cables and bracket
     
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector
     
    Splash shield
     
    Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO 2 S) connector
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    Rear driveshaft
     
    Lower ball joints
     
    Right damper fork

  5. Separate the inner CV-joints from the transaxle and intermediate shaft and support the axle halfshafts out of the work area with safety wire.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Intermediate shaft
     
    Rear engine stiffener
     
    Clutch housing cover
     
    Right front mount and bracket
     
    Transaxle mount and bracket
     
    Rear engine mounting bolts
     
    Transaxle flange bolts
     
    Transaxle

To install:


NOTE
Use new circlips, split pins and self-locking nuts for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle. Tighten the flange bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) and the rear engine mounting bolts to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm).
     
    Transaxle mount and bracket. Tighten the bracket bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) and the through bolt to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
     
    Right front mount and bracket. Tighten the mount bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm) and the bracket bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Clutch housing cover. Tighten the 12mm bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm) and the 6mm bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Rear engine stiffener. Tighten the 8mm bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) and the 10mm bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Intermediate shaft. Tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Axle halfshafts
     
    Right damper fork. Tighten the pinch bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm) and the nut to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joints. Tighten the nut to 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-59 Nm).
     
    Rear driveshaft. Tighten the bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    HO 2 S connector
     
    Splash shield
     
    VSS connector
     
    Shift cables and bracket. Tighten the bracket bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Wire harness bracket
     
    Reverse lamp switch connector
     
    Transaxle ground cable
     
    Starter motor. Tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Clutch slave cylinder and hose bracket
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Negative battery cable

  3. Fill the transaxle to the correct level.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.

2002-06 Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Transaxle ground cable
     
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector
     
    Splash shield
     
    Shift cables and bracket
     
    Clutch slave cylinder and hose bracket
     
    Wire harness bracket
     
    Water pipe mounting bolt
     
    Brake booster and EVAP line mounting bolts. Attach an engine support hanger to the head to support the weight of the engine.
     
    Upper transmission mounting bolts
     
    Transaxle mount and bracket

  5. Separate the inner CV-joints from the transaxle and intermediate shaft and support the axle halfshafts out of the work area with safety wire.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Intermediate shaft
     
    Right front mount and bracket
     
    Rear engine mounting bolts
     
    Rear driveshaft
     
    Subframe (see the Engine Removal and Installation procedure)
     
    Clutch housing cover
     
    Transaxle
     

  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Transaxle rear mount and bracket. Tighten the bracket bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) and the through bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Transaxle. Tighten the flange bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Front mount and bracket. Tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Clutch housing cover. Tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Subframe: 76 ft. lbs. (98 Nm)
