WARNING
Do not permit the steering wheel to turn whenever the steering gear is disconnected from the steering column. Damage to the air bag wiring can result.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Center the steering wheel and lock it in position.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air bag and steering wheel
     
    Steering flexible joint
     
    Front wheels
     
    Outer tie rod ends
     
    Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO 2 S) connector
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    Transmission shift cable
     
    Power steering fluid lines
     

  6.  
  7. For 4 wheel drive vehicles, perform the following:
    1. Remove the rear driveshaft.
    2.  
    3. Remove the right and left front mounts.
    4.  
    5. Remove the rear mount and bracket.
    6.  
    7. Tilt the engine back to lower the transfer assembly output flange about 1.57 inches (40mm).

  9. For all vehicles, remove or disconnect the following:

    Stiffener plate
     
    Steering gear mounting brackets
     

  10.  
  11. Slide the steering gear to the right until the left end clears the subframe, then slide the gear to the left and out of the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Position the steering gear in the vehicle, right end first.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Use new self-locking nuts and bolts for engine mount installation.



    Steering gear mounting brackets. Tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Stiffener plate. Tighten the plate bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm) and the steering bear bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).

  5. For 4 wheel drive vehicles, install or connect the following:

    Rear mount and bracket. Tighten the upper bracket bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm), the lower bracket bolt to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm), the mount attaching bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm), and the mount through bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
     
    Left and right front mounts. Tighten the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm) and the nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
     
    Rear driveshaft. Tighten the bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
     

  6.  
  7. For all vehicles, install or connect the following:

    Power steering fluid lines
     
    Transmission shift cable
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    HO 2 S connector
     
    Outer tie rod ends
     
    Front wheels. Position the wheels straight ahead.
     
    Steering flexible joint. Tighten the pinch bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
     
    Steering wheel and air bag
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the power steering system.
  10.  
  11. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.

WARNING
Do not permit the steering wheel to turn whenever the steering gear is disconnected from the steering column. Damage to the air bag wiring can result.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Center the steering wheel and lock it in position.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air bag and steering wheel
     
    Front wheels
     
    Driver-s side dashboard lower cover and undercover
     
    Air cleaner housing
     
    Steering joint bolts
     
    Tie rod ends
     
    Steering hoses
     
    Left side flange bolts
     
    Mounting brackets
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the unit so the pinion shaft points outward. Remove the pinion shaft grommet. The steering gear is removed through the driver-s side.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Mounting bracket and side flange bolts: 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm)
     
    Supply line flare nut: 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
     
    Tie rod ball stud nuts: 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)
     
    Steering joint bolts: 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
